View Full Version : Grading Contest

This has probably been done before, but I think it will be instructive.
The images are two cards graded by PSA. Guess the grades. The first correct answer will receive a scholarship to PSA University. I will remove the white tabs on December 28th to reveal the solution and recognize the winner if any.
Please disqualify yourself, if you think you previously owned either card

I am guessing the Schmidt has two hard-to-see creases, that many of its previous owners probably haven't even seen. Ergo, I go...

PSA 3 for the Duffy (no creases)
PSA 2 for the Schmidt (hard to see stuff)

Remember folks, the purpose of TPG is not that all 3s will look the same. The purpose is to reflect the flaws of the card that are not apparent to the prospective owner.

Frank,

I'm not sure if you've read the rules of this community web site/bull board. If you start a contest you have to offer a vintage card with a value of >$100 as a prize. The rule was put in place to ensure to increase participation in the contest. :p So, what's the prize?

One quick question - we are making a lot of assumptions about the cards being shown. Can we assume that there are no small creases (or other imperfections besides what's visible in the pictures/scans) on either card?

I'll whirl.....

The Schmidt appears to have glue stains on the back side. Thus, it got hammered by an experience grader who mercifully gave it a "2." While the Duffy, despite the obvious tobacco(?) stains and rounded corners received a "2.5" by some rookie grader who had only been on the job for a week,

By the way, I totally concur with what Fred said in the previous post.

Lovely Day...

Iggy, I was on the same wavelength, but thought 2 and 1.5. Ouch

Frank,

I'll say 1.5 for Duffy and 4.5 for Schmidt.

I don't do too well on guessing PSA grades, but based on what I've seen.....

Duffy 6

Schmidt 3.5

Thanks for the contest!

Best,

Andy

Visually the Duffy is a 2 and the Schmidt is a 5...but I suspect they are both the same grade, and that is the point of the contest.

PSA 1 and PSA Authentic....

It would be easier to opine as to the grade of each of the cards, than it would be to guess or divine the grades that PSA assigned.

They look like a 1 and 5.5 to me, but I am sure I am wrong. My guess is they are both 3s.

Beat me to it but that's my guess as well.

The glue residue on the Schmidt is what deserves the 1.

There has been at least one winner, but let's keep this thread open due to popular interest. Correct answers will be notified by PM, until the contest closes, but the scholarship has already been awarded. kmac32 was almost correct though concerning PSA University. The exam he referred to is an admission requirement and not a final. Cheers.

Are duplicate answers allowed? Before scrolling through the other suggestions, I came up with 2 and 5.5. So if I'm allowed to duplicate another, I'll stick with that. (I could be swayed to 1.5 and 5.5, but someone else already guessed that too, so I'll stick with my initial.)

Thanks for sharing,

I would say 1.5 and 3.

Bridwell
12-15-2011, 07:22 PM
I will guess 3 & 2.

PSA sometimes goes easy on staining, like on the Duffy but they are tough when there is glue residue.

Three correct entries out of forty. You know who you are......and now everyone else does. Duffy average guess was 2.05. Schmidt average guess was 3.34

I'm happy with the deal I got on both cards for different reasons.
