gentlemen-
submitted for your collective opinions:

this card is currently being auctioned on ebay by just collect with a starting bid of $12.5 k...
upon researching, look what i discovered in my personal archives...
i find it somewhat amusing that the top edge of the most recent incarnation has undergone a century of wear in a few scant years!
comments...?

Somebody worked the top of that card trying to get it into a numbered holder.

.. Also looks like paper loss on the back disappeared

i thought at first it was paper loss too...
but concluded that it had to be instead, paper residue...

OK, paper residue makes more sense.. I was wondering if someone actually glued a little patch on!?!?

Good to see PSA got the grade right on this one. I feel the starting bid is a little high. Should have been started around $8000 but even 12.5K is a bargain compared to the PSA 2 (MK) of this card that sold for $28,048.

It would be interesting if Just Collect would release the name of the consignor. Might open up a can of worms.

Did someone really think thay were going to get that slabbed with a number? It's a horrible and obvious hack job.

Sad how far some will go to try and make a buck.

I agree on the sadness.... But PSA invited these people in the minute they graded that Wagner an 8.

Looks to me like color added top right corner.

It looks like the top of the card has been trimmed. Does anyone know if this card is from the St. Louis find of Drums from a few years ago where a lot of the cards were trimmed across the top? If so, does anyone know what it sold for back then?

If you don't want to assume the worst about people I humbly offer a more generous explanation:
Perhaps the owner of the card didn't like the aesthetic of such a modern edge on a 100 year old card and purposely worked the corners so it would look less shocking to the eye. If we want to give him the benefit of the doubt, perhaps he even told this to PSA when submitting and wouldn't have accepted a numerical grade.

Pretty much just as bad, though. Because if they reworked it to be more pleasing (less shocking) to the eye for resale, that's the definition of doctoring.

Even if not for resale, I don't like it. If you don't like the way the card looks, don't buy it. To buy it and then "correct" a problem, IS a problem.

Not a bad 'investment'. Pay $4888, then sell it for $12,500. Someone is a clever dude. Maybe a little too clever, for my taste.

Are you sure? This is how the original Hunt auction description reads:

"Drum advertising back has some light age toning and a small abrasion at the right side."
