Dan:

Not sure if the corner missing would make it altered, I would think a 1-Poor would be more accurate.

Some excellent cards so far in this thread... I'm really excited about this one... been hunting it down for quite some time, and stumbled upon the highest graded between both SGC and PSA. Will cross it over to PSA in the near future. Cost me a little more than I would've liked, but I'm pleased nonetheless.

I am now 1 card away from 50% completion of the Jackie Robinson Master Set.

I had enough eBay bucks from my '52 Topps Mantle that I bought a couple months ago to get this for the bargain price of $7.47! :D

It wasn't really something I was looking for, I kinda just found it since I had to use those eBay bucks on something. I miss the Bing Cashback program they had where you got something like 8% credited to your PayPal account when you bought something with Buy It Now on eBay. I would have preferred to have had the $225 cash more than the card, but I suppose I can always put it on the BST when I get it. :)

I don't venture over here too often, but it seems like I'm gonna change that.

I really do love the '50's TOPPS cards, always have.

I just can't get over how many cards posted here are absolute killers! WoW. Kudos to all are in order.

Just finished a deal for this one. Wish I could afford a nicer one but I needed to fill the Robinson void in my collection since I sold my '53. Always liked this card.

The 2012 edition of the SCD Catalog now lists 2 variations for this card, as well as the other double prints, Mantle and Thompson. It cites the reverse stitching on the back, although there are front differences as well, particularly for Mantle and Robinson

lovin the Ozzie Virgil... I believe he was the first Dominican player to ever play Major League Baseball

Thanks guys. My main collecting focus these days is post-war minor league issues, so this group was a pretty decent score for me. The players are: Ozzie Virgil, Joe Altobelli, Don Brummer.

Phil -

I've never seen an example of Gillick, nor is he in the 2011 Standard Catalog for this set. There are eleven cards listed with the key being Luke Easter. The set is probably not complete at eleven, so it's possible.

sweet JRob - Are you going to get it graded?

JustinD
10-13-2011, 11:15 PM
I think you're talking to me because I don't see Jrob in the thread.:)

Yea, I'm not sure when, but when I pulled this Jackie out of the shipping envelope that was my first thought. If this doesn't pull at least an 8.5-9, I would be shocked. The back is flawless as well.

I'm not a big grader, but I've only got 28 bucks invested so far and getting a 9 would certainly help that investment.:D

Matt, since you're collecting this set, maybe you know the answer. Is that 1954 Lasorda the only one in the set where the player goes beyond the border? Notice Tommy's glove goes to the edge of the card. I saw a few others where the player's arm or leg appears to be slightly over the color edge, but nothing as obvious as the Lasorda. That's something I hadn't really noticed before.

The Lasorda is probably the most extreme that I've seen...there are a few that bleed over but not to the degree of the Lasorda...these are examples in just the first 20 cards!

Interestingly, the Topps Archives version of the Lasorda card is cropped a bit differently (no bleeding in to the border)...here's a link to one.

GHG--interesting point. Now I am going to have to look through my whole set and see what I find

On a quick check... on cards with white background it is hard to tell, but for instance on the 94 Banks card, his ass looks to be hanging out. Others I noticed :
19 Lipton--bat
25 Kuehn-glove
27 Faris-bat
42 Mueller--ass
44 Garver-sleeve
86 Herman--sleeve
159 Philly--bat
178 Lowry-bat
179 Allie--glove

Been lurking here for a bit, figured my first Mantle was worth posting about. I've loved the 53 Topps set and Mantle in particular since I started collected the 99 Gallery Heritage cards in those old days when I collected modern, never pulled the trigger on the big one until this week though. It's a PSA 1, but I like it enough!

Very Nice 53 Mantle, I probably stand alone when I say this but I actually like that one better then his 52.

Great cards everyone. I picked up a few along the way as well:

Definitely gotta agree with Steve. That centering isn't a big deal, it's a very nice card. Actually, the fact that the card is somewhat close to being equally off center t-b and l-r gives it a really nice look..
