This was taken from a 1988 reprint of the 1967 ACC by Richard Gelman-

According to Jefferson Burdick, in the ACC, Inserts with magazines and newspapers were distributed in 3 different ways:
1- As Supplements to the paper- These must be inscribed as Supplements to the paper. They are predominantly of the print type and once were a common feature of the Sunday newspapers and many magazines.

2- Offered in exchange for coupons clipped from the papers. Several sets in card format were given in this manner.

3. As Premiums for new subscriptions. This method was not extensively used. Occasionally a small postage charge was made for these types but unless the charge was sufficient to cover their full fair value it would not affect the insert status.

Supplements were used at quite early dates, at least as far back as the late 1870s, which may make them one of the earliest types of inserts known. Most of these listed dates from the 1890 period. Because of their size and difficulty in mounting, the larger type print types have not been sought by many card collectors, except those possibly pertaining to sports and historical events.

Here are a few uncatalogued M type cards....(and the return of the quarter)

Nice ones, Leon. Milan looks like a blind man searching for something to hold onto. Interesting issues.

I need a bigger scanner bed. I love the biographies on the backs of these.

I have always liked the M113s...also a 1909 M101 Detroit supplement.
