Rec'd this sweet old image from Jason W, Thanks Jason. IMO, there's no question that this thin-paper photo, with silvering, foxing, age spots and feel, closely resembles the original old shot of the USS Maine surveyors photo I have ca1898.

The one thing that concerns me a tad, is the size of the paper and large white bordering. I'm leaning towards a photograph of a photograph myself. Okay, so what is the origin of this image. If there was ever another copy, it'd be found in these environs. grazie!

Hi Steve- well, it is an image of the Knickerbockers and Excelsiors, which was originally taken in 1859. Large format photographs from that period are almost nonexistent, and if you found one it would likely be a salt print, a very early form of photography that preceded the albumen by a few years. Your image is of course not period, and it is not clear when it was made. My guess is probably sometime around 1920, but I'm not sure.

And among its significant features is the sixth player from the left is a 24 year old Harry Wright, almost certainly the earliest image of him we know.

Agree with Barry. 1920's or so. Perhaps a museum enlargement of the time. Maybe even a send-away from a sporting publication.

I'd agree. The silvering shows it's old.
