Cap Anson, the greatest player of the 19th century, and Mike "King" Kelly, the most colorful(and a pretty good ball player as well).

Jim, good luck with the set. It still amazes me that there are cards available from that time period that could be in NM-Mint condition. Thanks for posting.

Allen & Ginters were made using really good quality paper stock, and they were thick. Cards like that have the best chance of surviving in top condition. N162's, in comparison, were made with softer paper, and it is hard to find them in top shape.

On pure aesthetics, N28s are my favorite 19th century set.

Since these cards were intended to be taped or pasted into the album, you will often find low grade examples with back damage. If the album had been kept well over the years, the fronts could be beautiful, however. I have a couple N28's, and, well.... here they are :D :

Really nice for the grade.

The collectors of the shiny stuff really like A&G as well. (with a jersey piece, 1/1 and an autograph on it )

I just got the Bogardus in the mail on Saturday, so now my Rifle Shooters group is complete. The Bogardus and Caruthers have serious paper loss on the back from being pulled out of an album I suspect. I could also use an upgrade on the Carver. I love these cards. :)
