I have nothing against the guy, and am all for someone trying to make a buck but I would probably go with "yepbg". He has nice stuff but just not at a price I'm willing to jump on which is too bad b/c I'd love to add some of his stuff to my collection!:D

Agreed on 707. The only thing I ever bought from them was a pair of trimmed t206's. They were auctions though, and came in at a decent price. I decided to check out some of their other stuff and their website, and Holy Crap were they expensive. That was about 3 years ago, and I've checked in on their site a few times, with seemingly ZERO reasonably priced cards to be found.

Absolutely. 707.

I'm actually banned from bidding --- heh heh....I just bid too low.

However, I noticed this early today... Why can't people just do 2 searches when looking for cards?????????????????????

Not even close. Totally correct here. Yepbg is usually 3-4x what the card is worth if that. Sometimes he lowers his price by 5% to remain only 395% above market value. Sells about 1 of every 700 cards he lists at ridiculous BIN prices.

Although they rarely sell pre-war, burbanksportscards is notorious for being overpriced. I agree with others that yepbg's prices are ridiculous and clearly the seller has no interest in moving inventory.

My vote goes to 707. It seems like they have more of the items that I collect but they are typically 3X the anticipated price.

These guys may be smarter than you give them credit for. yepbg had around $5700 in sales in the last week on just a handful of cards. Maybe 20 or somewhere around there.

Now if he doesn't need the money and can afford to sit on stuff, why not sell that way, strictly from an investment stand point. He still has all the inventory he can eventually sell and it isn't a ton of work selling so few cards. Very little labor time.

At 20% profit margin after all the expenses are paid he is making close to $1200 for doing very little work. Basically it looks like these guys are making a little money and increasing their inventory quite a bit. They must be doing something right from a purely investment stand point.

I would think his profit margin is alot higher than 20%. I know he bought a card from me for $20 and sold it for $125. I would think that is more the norm than 20%.

calvindog
07-21-2011, 03:29 PM
I haven't totaled up all that yepbg has sold over the past week because I stopped scanning the 'sold' pages after going through about 500 listings and not seeing any that sold at all. But I did check his completed listings over the past 15 days and, checking from most expensive down, I noticed that he sold a total of 11 of his most expensive cards -- out of the first 1200 listings he had. Which means he's selling less than one 1 out of 100 of his most expensive listings. If that's how he wants to waste his time, good for him.

Unless you can replace the inventory relatively quickly, it doesn't make sense to turn it over quickly at a low margin. Now I do think these guys do take it to an extreme with extremely high margins and an extremely low turnover ratio.

It could be more than 20%. I would think it is at least 20%. I mean even if he has 3000 items listed a month, he is only spending $150 in listing fees.

Looks like he is doing something right. Even at 20% margin he made over $1000 last week and only had to package 20 items.

By the way, I am taking all of his other expenses into account with the 20% margin.Card supplies, office supplies, fees, shipping and shipping supplies, computer costs, all that good stuff. At any rate, I don't think these guys are just wasting their time. Seems to be working rather well for them.

His profit margin has to be closer to 100% to make it worth his while...

Remember to count the ebay/paypal fees...at approx 10%-14% on buy it nows..sales of $5700 have ebay/paypal fees of $600-$800. A seller has to make a 30-40% return just to pocket a 20% profit. If you buy something for $75 and sell it for $100, it's not 33% profit... ebay/ paypal gets $11.75 out of your $100 sale..so it's buy for $75 sell for $100...profit = $13.25.

This is my personal experience, I'm sure everyone varies:

I'm all too happy to speak about this, because yepbg and 707 are definitely the highest. However, in my experience when you contact yepbg directly (Brian Goldberg,) he's been more than willing to talk much more rationally about his card prices. He places them on EBay at those prices not so people actually BIN, but so they KNOW he has the card, and then you can contact him "off the grid" (EBay is cracking down on that now), and then he can get away with dealing the card without having to pay the 15% EBay fees and PayPal fees if u pay by check.

On the other hand, Levi at 707 has been nothing but a brick wall for me when it comes to dealing. I've never purchased a single card off him, not because I didn't offer decent prices, but because he tried to squeeze every last penny out of me. For example, I made an email offer on 3k+ worth of cards (already a premium offer, BTW), and he countered with $3100. That's less than 3.5% of the entire deal and he let it fall through. I've never had that experience with anyone else.

If you want to know the true value (seriously) look at 707s BIN prices, divide by 2, and that is basically what the vcp is of said card. Seriously. Try it.

I don't think the fees are quite that much on higher dollar items. They go down considerably after the first $1000, as low at 2% I believe.

Yes these sellers have very high bin's (707 & yepbg) but as a seller they are keeping the hobby from a going in a decline. I cannot count the amount of auctions I have done where the final sale price is at 80-95% of the lowest listed bin regardless of vcp and if these sellers priced there cards to sell it would be 10-40% lower for some current auctions where they have the only similar item.

I never looked to see the average price per sale for this seller but yes it's true the higher the value of the item the lower the fees, but a $2000 card still costs you $142.50 in ebay /paypal fees.
If you sell 10 $200 cards your fees would be about $205.00 for that same $2000 sale.

Hmm. Don't know that I agree with that. If keeping the hobby from going into a "decline" involves dumbasses looking at incredibly inflated prices as a basis for their bidding strategy, then that house of cards is going to fall anyway. At least hopefully, there aren't enough really stupid people to keep that dynamic going.

Perhaps I'm foolish, but at least from the collecting standpoint, I tend to believe that the people who are in the market have done their homework before they jump into buying the higher level vintage. If they haven't, they get what they deserve. If they have done their homework, they ought to realize that neither the prices of 707 or those of yepbg bear any resemblance to the actual market and make their decisions accordingly. The idea that a couple of dealers whose prices are astronomical should somehow be viewed as keeping the hobby afloat, IMO, is complete BS.

I can't speak to the current situation, but I did get some reasonably priced stuff from Levi when I was actively involved in vintage collecting. He can't be an expert on every price nuance. Additionally, he was always a pleasure to both buy from as well as to sell to. He paid fair prices on stuff he wanted of mine and was typically willing to take 10% or so off of his cards that I bought. He is a decent guy and I always had good interactions with his people.

If someone is "overpriced", just stay away from his stuff. If they are a jerk, then don't deal with them. But if someone is pleasantly firm on their pricing, there's certainly no reason to take it personally. It's simply a business transaction.

Yepbg has a lot of value for me. I take his prices and divide by 4 (usually, but sometimes more) to establish a true market value. Sort of my own free VCP.
But I do like his inventory.

And "burbanksportscards" wins my award for the most ridiculous scans. I think when you click to enlarge, the scans get smaller with these guys.
