Jim,
Those are beautiful cards. I hope to start and complete that set one day....although maybe in 4's or 5's.
Is it typical to see '36 Goudey's sell for above SMR price?
How realistic is the SMR for determining the market value of pre-war and cards of the 50's?
Are there any sets off the top of your head that routinely sell above SMR?
Thanks for any help you can provide. This site is a great learning tool.

My son (now age 15) and I started a collection of '38 Goudeys about one year ago. This is my son's favorite!

Not sure if we are showing off high grade 38s but I do love my DiMaggio.

Jeff,
I tend not to rely on SMR too much. I am much more inclined if there are sufficient examples to use vcp. If nothing exists on vcp I would use smr as an approximation of value and then adjust based on pop. This is especially true for commons as fr example not that many collectors would look for a 38 Goudey Joe Vosmik in psa 8 unless they wee a set collector. Thus if Vosmik was a low pop it would go well above smr and if it was a high pop it would go much lower. The stars or hall-of-famers would vary less and their smr value could take the pop into account.

Thanks for the insight Jim. I appreciate people taking the time to share their knowledge of the hobby. Everytime I think I know a decent amount, I read something that I have yet to think about or consider.
