Take a look at this auction, since we're on the topic of EBay and all it's idiosyncrasies:

http://cgi.ebay.com/1952-TOPPS-MICKEY-MANTLE-ROOKIE-GAI-EX-MT-6-5-/220800495931?pt=US_Baseball&hash=item3368bc313b (http://cgi.ebay.com/1952-TOPPS-MICKEY-MANTLE-ROOKIE-GAI-EX-MT-6-5-/220800495931?pt=US_Baseball&hash=item3368bc313b)

who feels like gambling? A seller who opened up their account 18 months ago (as opposed to 18 days ago) with a feedback score of one, and no returns on graded cards. I wrote the guy about these points, and he replied:

Most people dont offer refunds on graded cards. I was just looking at how other sellers sold graded sports cards. As far as selling never planned on selling it, until now. So, figured ebay would be the best way to do so. Thanks

I guess so far at least 4 people think this is worth the gamble, or is there another 49 Paige story on our hands?? Thoughts?

...then its probably not a rookie mantle. "1" feedback does not make me feel secure irregardless of when he registered. It would be interesting to find someone that lived near him in Ohio and ask him if they can come over and view the card. Sounds more like a duck to me.....

It always annoys me when people refer to the '52 Mantle as his rookie..

His 1 feedback is from April 2010 and it was a 1965 Mantle PSA 5. Not saying it was a true transaction - but you never know. Pay with a CC and prepare to fight if/when the time comes. Any bets on where it ends at?

I grew up loving topps so this is my view...pick somewhere else to spray your negativity.

Does that mean that you consider the 1958 Topps Stan Musial AS card his rookie? How about the 1998 Topps Alex Rodriguez? Would you call that a rookie too?

It doesn't matter how you feel about Topps, a rookie is a rookie, and these are not rookies, just like the Mantle isn't. They are however noteworthy for being their first Topps cards, and that's it.

Well the '33 Goudey is Ruth's rookie, just check the Beckett. ;)

Indeed...And according to PSA half of the '49 Bowman rookies aren't rookies, because they still consider the '49 Leaf to be '48.

I would say if you balance your desire to own this card, against the fact the seller has a feedback of 1...and the end result is it is too risky for me. I would pass. You'll have other opportunities.

The GAI holder would turn me off. And it is definitely NOT his rookie card.

Stating a fact isn't "spraying negativity"...

I'm curious, I asked him what part of Ohio he is in. I only live about 15 minutes from the Indiana/Ohio line. Might be worth a drive if he'd let me take a look :)

It could just be the scans but this version of the card should have a missing pixel on the upper left side of the card and it's not present or just doesnt show up on the scans.

I'd say go for it. If it's real you could get quite the bargain.

No back scan to show the serial number... I'd stay away regardless.

What's up with all these douchebag scammers from PA? The scammer in the other thread that ripped off a board member is also from PA.

Edited to add: I bet there are more scammers in the state of PA than in all of Nigeria.

He probably falls more in line of being an idiot then a scammer.

Ummm, what the hell is that '51 Mantle going for 4K? Is the seller on drugs?

I asked for local pickup with cash payment and the seller declined. He said he would end early for $15K but would only mail the card.

"Hello, i would prefer to send the card out and have someone sign for it this way i have proof of delivery. Please dont be offended but it a scary world out there. The buy it now was set at 15,000.00 which if you look on Ebay is very firm considering other sellers sre selling lower grades at about the same price. Thanks for the intrest.

Didn't it used to be Ohio where all the scammers were?

Yes. One red flag after another on this. I would pick one of the other 150,000 '52 Mantles to buy if I were looking for one. IMO, no way in heck does that card get a numerical grade from SGC, BVG or PSA......

Yeah... it's a legit Mantle. From 2007 or so and has a value of what, $5 or $10?

It shouldn't take long for the real owner of that card to report the stolen scan of the "Mantel" card...

so why do they list essentially the same fake auction 3 times? I don't get the point of that.
