With my current t206 side project.. I'm wondering what is the largest T206 back run out of the board members here???

I know some cards have 20-22 backs...

I'm at 17 with my Seymour throwing and 17 with my O'leary hands on knees..

How many different backs have you acquired??? If back collecting for the same front pose is your thing.... feel free to post some pictures so we can all enjoy the work behind the number..

heres 16 of my 17 O'leary's ...(its minus one card I haven't had a chance to take a pic of yet) although I cant take credit for putting this one together.. it was another board members hard work.. but I enjoy the set just as much as if I did put it together...

Jamie nice cards, very cool.

I've shown these before but as long as you're not tired of seeing them. LOL

I just had them all graded by SGC all (T206's) graded VGEX-EX+ except Drum (A) missing color (A) and Cycle 460 (VG). Always looking for upgrades the Drum is a long shot but the Cycle....

The other two T213-2 and T215 are both SGC 20 hey you take what you can on porjects like this. If anyone has any Murphy's of this pose oddballs, better quality etc. drop me a line have plenty of trade bait and cash to maybe work a deal.

May I ask how you went about putting these together? Was it mainly patience watching ebay? I'm thinking about making this my next project but it seems a bit more difficult than just looking to go after putting together a set of t205's etc..

Great stuff, guys! Thanks for posting! Not only is it enjoyable to see those images with the cards lined up next to each other, but it's nice to see the "insanity" this hobby can create. Looks like a great way to enjoy this pastime!

I have all the George Brown, Chicago variations and missing one Washington version. Sorry, I don't have the raw ones scanned.

Tucker, I imagine the best way to go about one of these collections (and you guys can correct me if I'm wrong) is to purchase a card with very difficult back (Drum, Uzit, BL 460, etc.) and then go from there as the more difficult backs will pose the biggest hurdle, the more common backs will be more a case of persistence. Although, you could always do a player that isn't featured on any of the most difficult backs!

Thanks Rhett. Just one quick follow up. Where is the best place to look for the tough backs? (My collecting so far has been limited to t205 beaters, so i haven't spent much time looking for t206's with tougher backs :))

Would i have the best luck on ebay? Or would I do better looking at the major auction houses? Or even the BST here?

Thanks so much for all your help.

Hey Tucker.. with my seymour throwing back set http://s251.photobucket.com/albums/gg309/blunder19/T206%20Seymour%20Back%20Set/

I started out just like the other guys have said...getting the BL460 first.. once you knock off the hardest back... you know you have the best shot of completing the back set... in most cases the toughest back will be a 1 of 1

you can find them on ebay... but its easier and more expensive to go to auction.. theres several drums and uzits in the REA auction right now.

you could start there and go after one of them.. hope that helps.

Tucker,

Sure no problem, not sure how it was for others but this is how it was for me on this project.

As a kid I had several finds of cards in the thousands. Most of the cards I have kept over the years or traded away to get upgrades or others I need. I even sold a few lots here via the BST.

Upon going thru these many years later I was stacking the doubles on top of each other and I realized I had quite a stack of Murphy's for no reason I can explain. I had Sovereign, Sweet Caps, Piedmonts, AB, and PB etc.

I made a joke to a collecting pal I should just go ahead and get them all. :)

We discussed that there were several cards that would be really tough and some that may not even be available or that there may be one of. Drum was one of those cards only one has popped up that we/I knew of, then there was Lenox only two I could locate and then BL460 there are 3 examples one really rough, one GD and the VGEX example above. Lucky for me I was able to locate all the toughies in an unreal 5-6mos.

Also I could agree getting the tough ones out of the way is a good start. However I don’t recommend it 100%. There’s nothing wrong with having 10 or more common backs it’s just as cool IMO, and if the tough one pops up it’s that much more enjoyable.

As you can see from this thread nothing stopping you from doing several players at once.

You also may find that a more common back is way tougher than you think. In fact I chased the upgrade for the BL460 for quite some time now funny enough I have two BL460’s both Danny Murphy.

http://photos.imageevent.com/piojohn3/ebay/websize/bl460.jpghttp://photos.imageevent.com/piojohn3/ebay/websize/9bl460.jpg

However I still have yet to find a Cycle 460 in VGEX or better for my Murphy run. While not super tough if you would have asked me 2 years ago would I have dupes of Cycle 460 or BL460 there’s no way I would have said BL460 yet still be looking for a Cycle 460 upgrade.

This set is full of surprises and a big part of a run is all in the luck of the draw or timing.

Also having good pals in the collecting community helps too, share your projects two or three board members were a big help to me especially Jim R.

But be warned it can be a double edged sword while sharing can help you locate cards it also can cost you. Some folks my try the same run tying up cards you need or knowing your new infatuation with a certain card prices seem to be very strong when cards come up that folks know you need.

One big piece of advice if you see it buy it don’t second guess or say I’ll wait another will pop up. As long as you can swing it get it you can always sell the extras if you find a better example.

Tucker hope this helps etc.

Cheers,

John

P.S. You guys in this thread are sick, at least I kept it to one guy. :)

Jeremy, is that last Ellam you posted a card? If so, what is it? Nice stuff.

Hi Matthew - That Ellam is a mini photo on thicker stock than photo paper, so perhaps it was cut out of a team photo album or is a card/photo promo of some sort...It was part of a team set for the 1913 Birmingham Barons. I bought it from Rhys Yeakley at the National in Chicago 3 years ago, and it was the only one he sold separate, as I believe someone else bought the other 14 or so players.

Ralph - Thanks for the Ellam rub ! Me love those Nashville players !!

Great Back run guys ! Such a fun project to pursue.

I recall reading a thread about a year or so ago and someone posted their Red Cobb Portrait with all of the backs, including the Ty Cobb back. I looked for the post I mention, but couldn't find it. That scan of the cards made me pop wood.

John,

Thanks for all the info. It sounds like you've had an awesome time collecting over the years. I hope that I can keep this up :)

I am assuming it would be easier to just complete a back set (1 of each back, different players) then it is to complete a back set of the same player. If that is correct i may start with a back set and then gradually swap them out for cards of one player

Awesome Fosters, Jim! That run is right up there - tough cards across a variety of tough sets!

Tucker - I'll echo the others and say you should knock off a hard one as initiation... I did not. My Pirates obsession started with Richard Armstrong selling off his Gibson collection... and had 8 of the 10. The others were some eBay, some auctions, and group lots where available, shared with others where possible. 3+ years in and I'm still short a Drum for the set of backs.

The other 14 Pirates poses in their partial completeness are on ImageEvent (http://imageevent.com/gspinf/earlypittsburghcards/tobaccoissues/t206byplayerwideview) (and needs updating). I think I'm at about 80% of the 208(?) Pirate F/B combos...

Best of luck with the project - it'll be as fun as you let it be!

Not the largest but certainly difficult to complete the Joe Doyle hands over head backs set. I just got the last piece I needed which is the Tolstoi back. Don;t have any scans available of them all right now but I will post them when I do. The run consists of:

Piedmont 350 SGC 40
Sweet Cap 350 factory 25 PSA 3.5
Sweet Cap 350 factory 30 SGC 40
Polar Bear PSA 3
Old Mill SGC 40
El Principe SGC 20
Sovereign PSA 1
Tolstoi PSA 1

The last three were very tough to find. PSA lists only 2 of each in the POP reports, in any grade. The Old Mill is also difficult but fortunately a few examples surfaced at about the same time so I had a few opportunities to acquire one, something that will probably not repeat itself for a while.

It would be a thrill if another back surfaced but I don't think one will.

Always looking to upgrade any of them if someone has one they would trade or sell.

Congratulations....you have all 8 of the permutations of the Slow Joe Doyle card with respect to its T206 backs.

Not an easy task....I found the Sovereign 350 to be the toughest of them. And, the EPDG about as tough.

Thanks Ted. I guess difficulty with a certain back can be attributed to a timely luck of the draw since, in this case, there are not very many of either one. When I had my high grade T206 set still together, I had a PSA 5 Sovereign Doyle. Wish I had that one back!

Maybe something for a different thread, but what is your theory on the amount of printing flaws found with this card? In particular, I can't recall another T206 in which you will find so many issues with the name and league designation. There are many Doyles with partial name/league lettering missing and this issue is found with various backs, not just one. There are also registration issues at a much higher rate of incidence than average
T206s. I have found about 80-90% exhibit poor registration, so much so that when you find a nicely focused example, it looks like a different guy.

Goes without saying for anyone who has closely studied the trends found in this Doyle card, that something is up with it. There is more to the Doyle Nat'l error and subsequent printing issues on the regular Doyle than is currently known.

I'll be happy to start another thread to discuss this- I don't want ruin this flow of the T206 backs set discussion.

tedzan
04-28-2011, 09:29 AM
I know you have followed all (or most of) the threads regarding the Joe Doyle front variations these past 5 years, so I need not reprise them here.
And, your suggestion of starting another thread to continue discussing this subject is well taken.

Besides American Litho's (ALC) fast correction of the Doyle "Nat'l" card (when issued in the initial press runs of the PIEDMONT 350 cards), I think Joe's
career ending June 25, 1910 most likely had something to do with the "printing issues" that you are referring to.....and, the difficulty with some of it's
T206 backs.

It's also interesting to note that (ALC) had intended to extend Joe Doyle's card into the 460 series (as is evident by this card's apple green SOVEREIGN
back).

As you have alluded to, this is quite a mysterious card.

Regards,

TED Z
