Just listened to espn radio (1050 NY) and they brought this up. Mentioned a dropped fly ball and a pitcher throwing over the first baseman. Not sure I believe it either but its a pretty cool argument.

Cubs probably thought there would be numerous opportunities in the near future to win a world series or two. pick up some extra $$$, then win the WS down the line..

That Bill Veeck's second book:

The Hustler's Handbook has the most information I have ever read on this subject. It was believed that the investigation into the 1918 World Series was a part of what sparked which ended up nailling the 1919 people.

I would believe there could have been a "fix" in 1918 as well

From a 58-year old life-long Cubs fan who'se the son of an 86-year old life-long Cubs fan, we can both assure you, the Cubs did not and do not have to try to lose!

Couldn't agree with you more.

The only part about this that hurts however is that I keep hearing about this from every Red Sox fan I know...you'd think they remembered the burden!
