From the beantown find... Have a group of the E97s and all are brutally trimmed. These blank-backs appear to be E97s (but not certain) and similarly hacked (only the three thusfar). Perhaps a notebook cover cutout?

Vaughn, Tinker and Bresnahan are E98s with blank backs. Very interesting!
Love the borders on the Bres.
The Moore is E97.
Do you know where this collection originated from Steve?

From Boston. It was the stash of a college chemistry professor. "Doc Clarence Ropp", born around 1895 I think it was... Didn't even smoke.
I think he spent lunch break rifling through the garbage in Harvard Yard;)
These all have E97 backs;

i've seen one e98 blank back before...although it factory cut if i remember correctly. the e97s are a bunch of hand-cut beaters...
the professor is all over the place, his e95s are correct...the e98s are blank handcut, and the e97s are regular-backed but hand cut and even a few e97s b/w mixed in.
Steve- interesting find! There was recently an uncut sheet of E97s offered for auction and it appears these cards came from another uncut sheet, albeit crudely cut.
The E98s are a stumper. I have blank backed E93s and E97s but haven't run across a blank backed E94 or E98 before. The blank backed E95s and E96s which circulate are usually from a notebook cover.
If you are interested in selling one of the E98s please let me know, I'd be interested.

In the trunk, I'd found an old photo of him, in his work. I think he was working on a polymerization process as a way to protect his cards. Obviously, the gov't funded experiments were a failure.

I was playing around in photoshop and came up with the below puzzle picture.
The first picture are the uncut e97 panels sold by Mastro in 2006. The second photo are your cards placed in similar layout to the Mastro ones.

That's a cool find.....Quan, I think have seen a one or two blank back E98s before as well....the Vaughan is tough in any condition...the only I could find years ago putting my set together had an Old Put stamp on it.

Have we ever conclusively determined how they were printed? Because I was playing around a bit more and kept the relationship between the cards the same but placed the bottom sheet on top of the top sheet. So, again, if you look at Mastro Sheet and then you look at this one, you can see that it looks like the bottom sheet could have gone on top.
The leap of faith comes in the relationship between the bottom of the Steinfeldt card and the top of the Birmingham card. If that looks right to everyone than that could be a link.
That would make one sheet which was 6 players wide and 5 tall. 30 cards per sheet.

Still geeking out on this. I just put in the missing players (dimly) in the background. I saw an old thread in the archives from Peter Ullman, Quan and Jim B where they were talking about the corrected sheet having Steinfeldt's name correctly spelled along with Cy Young (cleveland version), Nichols (Cleveland) and Sullivan (Boston). Since Steinfeldt is the only card we have to go by, I put the others in as suggested in the thread below.
