Show your 1933-34 R313B Wheaties (updated with Scan)

Hi, I know they are extremely tough (understatement) and many dont know what they are, but if you have any of the R313B Wheaties cards from 1933-34, can you post scans of some. (article in issue #6 Winter 2006 OLD CARDBOARD)

*Not to be confused with the related 1934 R313A Gold Medal Foods (Flour) World Series set.

PS. whats the book values in the 2011 SCD on this set now? Is it still $45 for a common in NRMT. Last years a common sold for $220 in VG and Klein sold for $300 in VG (12X more than book), thats the only 2 sales I have notes on.

I believe I just picked one up for very cheap....

Update, scans of the Hudlin card. I believe it to be one of the R314-2 Goudey Premiums and not the rarer R313B :(

The font and type of Pen on the R314-2 and R314-3 cards is usually much bolder and that what fooled me.

Oh well still a tough card, but not what I was hoping for.

In the 2011 SCD, they are all listed for $45 in Nr-Mt condition, with the exception of the following:

Earl Averill $275
Odell Hale $180
Chuck Klein $80
Red Faber $80
Al Simmons $80

There are a total of 19 cards listed in this set.

Yes Brad's info is the same set, but the values listed in the SCD are off.

The card I picked up I believe is from the set, as it is not the same pose as the common R313, and the Hudlin is not found in any other set I know of with the same type of design (ie. R313A).

Here is the auction, the card in question is the Hudlin on right. The Vosmik is a R314-3. Hudlin is not a part of the 19 card checklist Brad mentioned.

i picked up a Holland from the 33 wheaties just this week---
from Mike Peich on bst.
a great card and quite unusual series methinks.

Hi Barry, I believe the Holland is in the minor league Minneapolis Millers Wheaties set, like Mikes pictured above.
The set Im referring to has no advertising, it is mostly a Major League set with players known from Clev, StL AL, StL NL, Chi AL, Chi NL, and 4 players know from Des Moines of the Western League. The checklist is at 19 known not including this Hudlin (if it is one... which I think it is).

To most collectors the cards look very similar to the far more common R313 "Fine Pen", or a R313A Gold Medal Foods (Wheaties) World Series (StL/Detroit) "Medium Pen" cards, and are often found mixed in with them.

I know Tim N. has a few of these.
Im sure someone here also picked up the Chuck Klein and Roy Hudson on eBay back in Aug 2010. They are the only 2 Ive seen on eBay correctly identified and they sold for good $$ ($220/$300) in VG

They are identical in size to and have the same style handwriting as the ''standard 12'' from the world series teams --- I've seen a Megachecklist somewhere that has the Des Moines players listed as part of this set and subset ..... If Tim is still able to fog a mirror he'll chime in on this before midnight Sunday. I'll try posting some more scans later .

Exactly Mike, those are them :), and WOW super nice condition!

I just wanted to see scans of a few so I can compere them with the Hudlin when it shows.

It is basically from Tim Newcomb's article in issue #6 of OLD CARDBOARD.

It talks about both Gold Medal sets, the WS set of 12..... and the rarer group (like Klein, Averill, etc) as well


""To answer some of your questions (some info from the articles), the more commonly seen set of 12 Cardinals and Tigers World Series cards were issued as a promotion for Wheaties in 1934. The envelops have a return address for Gold Medal Foods, not Gold Medal Flour as they have been mistakenly called for years. 243,000 photos were mailed to 56,000 people between Oct. and Dec. 1934, fans received 1 card for each Wheaties box top. There is also an identical but far rarer group of cards (19 known so far) that match the Gold Medal Foods cards and these were thought to be have been offered to fans through radio broadcasts in Aug. 1933, and also the following summer. The Gold Medal Foods (Wheaties) cards are different from the R313 cards in that the name on front is more of a "Medium Pen" in size compared to the "Fine Pen" names of the National Chicle cards.""

Super nice cards Mike - If you don't mind me asking, where did you get them?------ The NM's were on E-Bay ; I think it was '' Zindler's''.
The beaters were scrounged at the usual sources , flea markets , estate auctions , moving sales , garage sales , etc. usually mixed in with National Chicle and Goudey Premium lots --- I'm happy to find even one every year or so--- I think Leon has the Al Simmons that Tim used in the article referred to in the other post ?

I have been looking for the Wheaties cards ever since reading about them in Tim Newcomb's Old Cardboard article. No luck whatsoever.

Frank, a couple of weeks ago, I thought I had spotted one too, an Al Simmons, but after further investigation is was one from the same series as your Hudlin.

I think Lew Lipset sold a bunch of the Wheaties cards a year ago or so. As I recall, they went for a good bit.
