Thank you, Leon, for sharing this great piece of our hobby history.
First, I loved seing Rob Lifson, Dave Mediema, Mr. Mendel and the other names, but the Brace article was superb. It shows that Brace recalls his own beginnings and mentions his mentors in the early 30's~~~wow!
I absolutely look forward to reading ALL articles from vintage publications.
The early Sport Hobbyist magazines are among the ones I've not seen in years.

Thanks again for posting this gem.

Cool article. Thanx for posting. I'd love to see those pics of Powers' finger breaking.

Has there been any effort to consolidate all of those "vintage" articles in to a database or something? A lot of the older periodicals just don't exist in any great quantity and it would be sad if that knowledge was lost to time...

After reading Leon's great post, I did a google search for "Chearles Brookes" and "Sport Hobbyist", and came up with some great articles by George Vrcheck who wrote for SCD many great pieces.
I found a history of Hobby Publications article and a fantastic one about hobby correspondence between guys like Lionel Carter, Jefferson Burdick and many other hobby pioneers. Simply amazing content incluing this one below on Jeff Burdick's health and the "changing of the guard" in our hobby.
I hope you enjoy this quote below, and I encourage you all to search out George's fine works about hobby history! Enjoy, Bill Hedin

“The doctors gave me a ‘totally disabled’ rating”…Burdick regrets not being able to travel with the Carters. “I’ll just get out one of them ‘trip around the world’ card sets and I’ll be there – a magic carpet without leaving my easy chair… I guess I told you that costs for our Catalog are now around $6,000 and the figure will be more, of course, before all are sold. You will probably figure that 3000 copies at $4 is 12,000 and so there is plenty of margin yet. But a lot of copies are sold to bookstores at less than $3 a copy and we don’t know how long the 3,000 copies will last. Maybe 10 years, with a lot of advertising spread along every year. Maybe a lot will never sell….” Regarding being at the Museum: “I usually go up on Tuesday and Friday…In a few years a lot of us old timers will be gone and you will be senior collector and top authority. Speaking of us going – Glidden Osborne of London just died. Probably had the biggest collection of cigarette cards in the world. I wonder how he left his collection – maybe to a museum or to the Cartophilic Society of which he was so long president.”
