Show off your highest grade prewar card. I don't have any myself so I would like to live vicariously through other forum members. Thanks for sharing....

Grades don't get any lower than this, but it's the only one graded by PSA. It's also my favourite card!

I don't have anything above SGC 50 now, but my two favs have been the PSA 6.5 Factory 42 Chase Blue that Dan C now has and the Factory 42 Evers that Craig has now. The Evers was a stunner, centering kept it from being and 8 I think.

Dust off the Evers Craig, let's see it again!

I have a fair number of prewar 9s and 10s--particularly from the play ball sets but also goudeys, diamond stars, sporting life and T206s. DEo not know how to post on here but I have posted some 9s and 10s on my blog.

Thanks Mike, I put the set together over about 20 years with constant upgrades. Over the years I have probably upgraded each individual card three or four times. Most of what is there now came from the three important finds of E93s that occurred in the past twenty years.

Here is a 1928 R315 Lefty Grove. I believe it is an SGC 84. I also have 1934-36 Batter-Up (PSA 7) and 1941 Double Play (PSA 8) Lefty Grove cards, but no scans are provided here.

Which Cobb? You may be talking to a lawyer. He's got no need for a soul! Besides, that kind of transaction belongs on the BST!

I picked these up, along w/ 15 other OJ's, at a yard sale in the mid-'80's. They all got nice grades, but if I recall correctly these were the only 2 8's. I wish I'd have kept scans of all of them, but I didn't---These were the last 2 I hung on to before selling.

Has anyone ever attempted to put together a collection of type cards (including the toughest ones), with a goal of acquiring the highest-graded examples of each? That might be a fun little project. You wouldn't necessarily place a premium on Hall of Famers, just the highest-graded cards extant.

Thanks, Richard. KBats are scary addictive; difficult to believe their crisp images were taken in ballyards 125 years ago. George Wood, as you probably are aware, is a Canajun, a Maritimer no less. One of the fellows on the Board who hails from PEI posted recently that Wood was inducted into the Canadian BBHoF this year.

1 of 1 with only 1 graded higher. Of course like most E98s the only Bender higher comes from Scott's Gang Green Set.... a beautiful set!

It is the highest graded E98 that I own. Personally, I'm not that big on high condition cards myself. They are 100 years old, and I don't mind them looking that way:)

Thanks everyone. I bought the Rusie raw on ebay a while back. It didn't grade all that high due to a surface wrinkle on the back but the image is probably one of the two nicest I've seen on an N172. Some great looking OJs as well as others in this thread all, enjoyed looking at everything. I'm not ready to sell my soul yet, but I'd offer my eye teeth and maybe even a kidney for a couple. Jim's E93s and that N172 Commy, David's K-Bat, Dean's little group, Fred's beauties, Jerry's Sunday and Nichols, Leon's K-Bat, several Cobbs...I need more disposable organs.

So the N690 Philadelphia may be changing hands. Good show!

Now I have to ask you something about the grade. My understanding of the grade EX+ is that a card should have wear equal to an excellent card, but because of some other positive factor, would be bumped up a half grade. Wouldn't the gem quality of that photo be enough to bump it to the EX+ 70 level? How could it not receive that grade? How much better of an excellent card could possibly exist?

Hi Barry
Thanks for the kind words about this extraordinary card. As you know I have loved that card but things have come up that I need to do, and with my focus on 20th century, it makes the most sense to let it go. As for the grade, we have discussed it many times. The graders just don't count photo quality on our gems. You and a few other "very expert" 19th century collectors have told me they have never seen a better photo on a 19th century card. I am not sure how one could be any better, but I am biased. Maybe this one deserves a 70 but, if I were the one bidding, I wouldn't be as concerned about the number, as I would be about the photo quality. I hope it goes to someone who understands exactly how nice it is. It is one of the true gems in our hobby. regards

barrysloate
02-01-2011, 02:05 PM
I agree that the eye appeal will sell itself. Regarding the numerical grade, you might hypothetically want to ask a grader just what this card would need to get the 70. I understand it won't grade EX-MT or NR MT because of the corner wear (which is in fact minimal), but at the Excellent level is it possible to be any nicer?

E93
02-01-2011, 02:16 PM
Leon,
That is a phenomenal card! I have no doubt that it will bring some heavy hitters to the auction block, as it should.

I also agree, as has been much discussed, that photo quality should be a much greater consideration in grading 19th century sepia cards like this. My guess on the technical grade is that the minor stain on the back kept it out of the higher grade, though if one only looks at the front it is a no-brainer.
JimB

P.S. That card not only has an incredible image, but it is also centered and has none of the common tilt cuts that can be a bit distracting.

We rarely grade anything as 99% of our cards are in plastic sheets, but here is one we had to grade. This is not a set we are collecting, so not sure what we will do with it. I believe this is the highest SGC graded one. Sorry the scan is not better.

who has thought of this...
check out Jeff's card again...if they ever do a film about Hal Chase, is there any way that they can use any actor other than Matt Damon to play the lead???!!!! Scary resemblance to his Cracker Jack card!

Matt Damon would be a perfect choice...I'm pretty sure Hal Chase couldn't act either...

Tony A's t206's are graded high enough for me too.

Thanks for an excuse for me to post this card that I am lucky enough to own...

Can't match some of these guys, but do have PSA 7's of the 1938 Goudey #250 DiMaggio, #277 Greenberg and #288 Feller. Also, a PSA 6 of the 1929 R315 Foxx yellow/gold stock variation. Unfortunalely, I don't have a scanner other than a document scanner.

Not quite prewar but nice card. Love the name spelling.
