Please take a look at the cards below. On the left is a 1931 Sun Pictures photo card of Wes Ferrell. On the right is the 1933 Uncle Jacks Candy card of Wes Ferrell. Take a look at how similar these two cards are. They share the same image and they both have "WESLEY FERRELL" written in the bottom right corner of the card in all caps.

I have two questions:

1. Does anyone know of a relationship between the developers of these two cards? These look VERY similar!

2. There are 10 known 1931 Sun Pictures cards. There are 30 known cards in the 1933 Uncle Jacks Candy set. I am going to assume that all of the 1933 Uncle Jacks Candy cards that show players from the 1931 Sun Pictures set use the same image. Can anyone prove or disprove this statement?

(Note: The cards are likely not shown in proper proportional to each other. The Sun Pictures cards are about 2 5/16 by 3 1/4 while the 1933 Uncle Jacks candy cards measure about 1 7/8 by 2 7/8.)

The picture is also the same for the 1933 Buttercreams issue and was colorized and used as the cover for the Oct 1931 Baseball Magazine (neither mine, unfortunately).

That's interesting... I'll have to look around for some scans of the 1933 Buttercreams to see if there is a consistent image between this group of cards... I know that the 1933 Lefty Grove Buttercream card and the 1933 Lefty Grove Uncle Jacks Candy card have the same image as well... And they used the same image on the 1931 Baseball Magazine for Lefty...

Ive known about the same photos and captions used for both sets, and always just thought they used the Uncle Jack cards to make the images on the Sun Photos.

But your comparison pictures prove otherwise, there is far more image showing on the Sun Photos than the Uncle Jacks, and the caption boxes are in different spots.

There are other sets that look nothing alike, that use the same images/captions

ie
R316 and W553
1926-29 Exhibit and W517

1933 Buttercream, 1933 Uncle Jacks, and 1932 BB mag cover all share the same photo of Earl Averill. I think the BB mag cover artist took license with the position of the bat, but used the same picture. Is there a Sun Picture card for Earl Averill?.

That's interesting as well.... There definitely seems to be a pattern between the Butter Creams, the Uncle Jacks and the Baseball Magazine covers...

There is no Earl Averill card known to exist in the 1931 Sun Pictures cards..

The following players are listed in the 2011 Standard Catalog for the 1931 Sun Pictures cards:

Earnshaw
W. Ferrell
Grove
Hartnett
Lazzeri
Pennock
Ruth
Simmons
Vance
H. Wilson

(I need the Grove card from the 1931 Sun Pictures set if anyone happens to have one for sale..... Email me at brad_green@cox.net....)
