Leon-Thanks for sharing the Zeenut pc once again--great image.

I have many postcards in my collection, and this one is unique. It was a different era in 1907, and I also keep in mind Jerry Seinfeld's comment, "But, that's okay."

Cheers, Mike

Hi Clayton. Good to hear from you buddy. Not sure of whom the teams are, but it's a 1911 ball game being played at the Ohio/Pennsylvania League ball field in Liverpool Ohio.
Postally stamped on the reverse. That's all I really know about the piece. It's by far one of the most amazing shots I've seen on an rppc.

What kind of PC is that Kahl, Rob? I'm not sure I've ever seen that one before.

It's a Souvenir Post Card Shop of Cleveland, without the identifying printing you typically see on the front (like in the Lajoie below, which I pulled from OldCardboard's site).

The Kahl has an interesting history. I bought it from Lew Lipset, who bought it from Charles Bray. The thing that throws me about this one is his uniform. Scroll up in this thread, and you'll see Jeff's team composite from the series. All of the players are wearing dark jerseys with with either a "C" or "Cleveland" on the front. Yet Kahl's uniform is white. According to baseballreference.com, Kahl made his debut May 2, 1905, and his final game was Aug. 2 in that, his only major-league season. So it's not like he was a late-season addition.

I love this PC. Thanks for sharing Tony. The expansive foul territory in left, the nice wheels parked along the left field side. Looks like you got your VIP seats jutting out down the left field line. A mini Coogans Bluff behind the park. Must have been an important game as the place is packed. Pure Americana. I thought it deserved a 2nd showing in this thread. Lot's of neat stuff in this thread. Also, my kind of thread :)

Very nice items! The two on the right are likely 1-of-a-kind real photo postcards with the far right dating to 1907-1918 based on the stamp box on the back and the other one based on the photo looks like early 1920's.

Val: I copied this scan from one of the recent auctions (can't remember which one). If memory serves, 'tho it don't serve too well, it was a near life-size portrait that was on display in Griffith Stadium (or RFK? or ??). Maybe someone else can get my story straight. Great image, eh?
I've always liked the Johnson and Street photo, and your colorized version is a beaut, but at the risk of offending the PC contingent and setting loose the Seinfeld quoters, it always struck my inner dinosaur as a tad gay.
This is a bloody great thread. Way too many mouth-watering beauties to single out one or another.

Many thanks for your kind words and very helpful info re my WaJo PCs. This info helped my very pathetic, Alzheimers-like memory recall the huge photo that David is referring to, which appeared in Legendary's November auction - ref. lot#1258, http://www.legendaryauctions.com/LotDetail.aspx?lotid=114775 - and which sold for $8,295. I acquired my same-image PC in a trade about a year ago, and it has been in my safe deposit box ever since (this is the best excuse I can offer for not recognizing the image as being the same!).

Love these postcard threads. Don't have much to offer but here's a McGraw that I thought was Keeler until I put it on this board a while back:

http://i292.photobucket.com/albums/mm25/gbmartin34/Misc%20Cards/IMG_0032.jpg

Here's our media guide from my senior year. We finished third at the NAIA World Series in Sioux City after defeating D1 Auburn when they were #1 during the regular season. We also defeated Miss State when they were top 25, D-2 #1 Delta State, NAIA #1 Dallas, NAIA #1 Bellevue, etc. Our head coach, Brian Shoop, formerly coached under Miss State's Ron Polk when Will Clark, Palmeiro, and Thigpen were there. After I graduated, Southern continued to win and finally won the World Series. They moved to NCAA D-1 but hired a new president who wanted football, so they switched to D-3. Coach Shoop moved to UAB where he remains, and Shoop's assistant is Coach Polk! Great men, both of them.

Wish I knew what was written on the back of these... I have tried to research A.R. Smith to no avail. Still cool postcards though.

Shawn I have the one on the left with a blank back. It was put out by Collier Magazine and drawn by Charles Dana Gibson. I can't find it at this time but will post if I can find it. It is a little bigger than a postcard I think. Hope this helps. D.

Hey Dynarl,

Thank you for the info! The two postcards are glued to a scrapbook so I wish I could see what is written on the back??? The scrapbook belonged to Emil Fertig who conversed with baseball players of the day. He was apparently the biggest fan of the Indianapolis Baseball team. He was a referee of sorts and the whole town relied on him for Baseball info. As you can see, A.R. Smith from Nashville, Tenn. is written on the front of the postcards, so I have tried to figure out if Smith has any relation to baseball??? No Luck...

I want to thank Jeremy or JJ or Nashvillebaseball as well. I tried to respond to your email but I am not sure if it went through?

I am posting another pick in case it got lost in translation.

As long as we're going a bit off the beaten path, so to speak:

http://photos.imageevent.com/exhibitman/miscellaneouscards/websize/Battle%20Royal%201.jpg

From Wikipedia:

"Before 1865, when the Thirteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution was signed, battles royal often appeared on the undercard of boxing matches. These fights would normally involve five or six slaves fighting blindfolded and bare-knuckled. Depending on the pre-agreed rules, these fights would either last until one man was left standing, the winner, or until two remained standing, at which point the blindfolds would be removed from the combatants and the fight continued until one was unable to continue. The owner of the winner would receive the prize, which was usually small.

The practice of fighting battles royal in this context continued long after the abolition of slavery. Some were still fought legally in the 1930s albeit with the use of gloves. However, most bouts in this period were fought illegally at "smokers", unsanctioned and unregulated boxing matches, as preludes to the main event. Almost all fighters at these contests, both legal and illegal, were still black African-Americans, although they were now allowed to keep their winnings. A battle royal is the subject of the first chapter of Ralph Ellison's novel Invisible Man.

Many major black boxers of the early 20th century gained their first in-ring experience at these battles royal. Such fighters include Jack Johnson, Beau Jack, and Joe Gans."

I have collected quite a few cool postcards. If anyone is still interested in seeing more, just ask and I'll dig up some snapshots of baseball history. One of my favorite fields of collecting. A group of men playing as a team. Imagine them aged and wrinkled with their grandkids on their lap telling stories of their glory years. Pointing to teammates and telling their stories. To me, it tells more in one picture than any single baseball card ever could. Enjoy.

Hello,
I was going to begin a new thread on a postcard question, but I thought I'd begin here. I recently purchased a team postcard of the 1906 White Sox. It looked familiar (I thought it was the Burke PC), and I bought it on a whim (and probably too quickly).

After I bought it, I looked in the Big Book to learn more about it, but I can't find the exact card. I found another PC (http://www.vintageball.com/1906_Burke_Sox.jpg) that has the same photograph, but it does not say 'White Sox-1906 -American League Champion' at the top. Also, the PC cardboard is thin and a little slick. Not, UV-coated crap slick, but slicker than other pre-war PCs I own.

So, I'm thinking this PC is not from 1906, but most likely from a later time period when PC postage was still 1 cent.

Any help identifying my PC would be most appreciated.

Peter, if you look closely at the 1906 post card Robert posted just after your post, you can see that they were taken at the same session. Some of the players have moved around, but there are many clues that show it was the same day. One is Patsy Dougherty wearing a 1905 uniform, while all the others are wearing 1906 uniforms. Also. look at Ed McFarland and Jim Hart in the two images - they swapped places, but they have the same sweaters, same dark collars.

Excited to pick this one up the other day. A bonus is the postmark on the reverse -- September 24, 1908 (the day after the infamous Merkle game). This card was sent from a guy in Chicago to his brother in New York, but no mention is made of the game...

It's period. The undivided back is the key. Before March 1, 1907 postcards had to have only the address on the postage side by postal regulation.
(you could write on the picture side, or if you sent it as a letter at the letter rate you could write on the address side. )
So nearly all undivided backs are pre 1907. Some real photo postcards aren't divided, but they're the exceptions.
