After a long journey—most likely originating in France—this assortment of boxers from the 1952(ish) Felix Potin set finally made its way to my collection. I am not sure if there are any more boxers in this particular Potin release, but if there are, I would sure love to own them—or at the very least see some scans. I was particularly excited about acquiring the "Un direct de Cerdan" card, as I had never seen it before.

Love the Potin cards. One of the many European Boxing issues I really like.

Adam, is that an American strip? I've never seen that style of lettering before.

Thanks.

Does anyone know of a complete checklist for the Potin boxers? I haven't been able to locate one online. I am tempted to buy an empty album off ebay France just to see who comprises the boxing set. (The album contains blank spaces—aside from the name of the person shown in the picture—where the cards are supposed to be glued, and groups the cards by sport.) Kind of a steep investment at something like 100 euros to get the checklist, LOL.

Adam, sweet strip!

It is as American as chop suey. Just extremely rare. It was made using the art from the first issue of Exhibit 4 on 1 cards, the mixed baseball-boxing-entertainment group. It is only the third example I've ever seen from the boxing set. I have seen a few baseball cards as well. Thinner stock than a cut-down 4 on 1 (those exist too). Interestingly, the three known strips are in different colors: green, light blue and purple.

Collect.com just closed a very strong boxing auction. The group of boxing autographs they had was great. The finest Sonny Liston autographed item I've ever seen--a PC sized self issued promo card--went for $1600 plus juice and a great Ezzard Charles PC went for $375 plus juice. Both those guys died young and before the autograph craze. I did manage to snag one good one, a PC of Marcel Cerdan, the great middleweight champ who died in a plane crash in 1949 on his way here to fight Jake La Motta:

I don't often pick up boxing, but here is one that just arrived and another one I picked up last month. If you have original pictures of Billy Conn, Fritzie Zivic, Harry Greb or Charley Burley, please let me know.

It's no longer December, but I wanted to bump this thread to include a scan of two Felix Potin album pages that contain the spaces for the boxers (a space for boxer Jo Ventaja can be found on a page with fellow Olympians). Please note: I do not own the album or the scans.
