I'll start it off with one that arrived earlier this week - it's as close to THE Wagner as I'll likely ever be, but I'm pretty happy about it!

kcohen, that Kelly is one of my all-time favorite cards, and in that amazing condition too, congrats!!! I just love the stormy background and tough look that Kelly has, he looks more like a pirate or ex-con than a ballplayer (but I guess most did back then).

and scott, nice wagner! that's on my want list!

Although not a card, I picked this item up for my man cave. A crate top for Sweet Caporal Cigs. I thought it was unique and different and still part of the Tobacco cards

Got this off the BST. I've been looking for a Zip Zabel card for a while. Fellow Kansan along with Larry Cheney. Was pleasantly surprised at the size of this postcard. The inner picture is the same size as a standard pc. Thanks to Phil Garry for a great transaction.

I'm still waiting for a few big ticket items from the auction houses to get here but, in the meantime, here are some of the cards I have landed in the past couple of months.

Picked up the "Sweet Caporal" postcard from good ol' Dan Yaw on eBay. It depicts a game between Baltimore and Montreal circa 1905. Love this card. It's a clear window unto a baseball moment a century ago. What's not clear is who made the play to first. It's hard to see but the Baltimore player on the left is wearing a glove on his right hand; if he's the pitcher he seems out of place with respect to the position of the first baseman. Might have been a bunt or a grounder right to the bag. Maybe one of you field generals can explain it to me.

http://photos.imageevent.com/kawika_o_ka_pakipika/bbbofsfirstclass/recentpickups/huge/1905%20and_-%20Sweet%20Caporal%20pc.jpg

Holy Toledo! That baserunner is going to be out by a mile. The catcher is Fred Abbott. Anybody got his T206? Shortstop could be one of a couple of guys but second baseman would likely be Harry Hinchman, another T206er. That field looks like you could shoot pool on it. A beautiful day for baseball in 1909. EBay seller was judwilson; he has some terrific postcards and is a straight-up guy.

http://photos.imageevent.com/kawika_o_ka_pakipika/bbbofsfirstclass/recentpickups/huge/1909%20Toledo%20pc.jpg

The "Champions" are from St Louis College which is actually a high school (and sports powerhouse) in Honolulu near where I live. These youngsters look just like the kids that I see today when I drive past the campus. Some of them even look like they're wearing Dockers. Those little Hawaiian urchins off to the side make this card a winner.

http://photos.imageevent.com/kawika_o_ka_pakipika/bbbofsfirstclass/recentpickups/huge/1911%20St%20Louis%20HS%20BB%20pc.jpg

One more Red Belt for the cause. Just need three more for a basic set.
http://photos.imageevent.com/kawika_o_ka_pakipika/bbbofsfirstclass/recentpickups/huge/Red%20Belt%20Hit%20and%20Run.jpg

Big Thanks to our Paul G. for making a handful of PC796s available to me and for the quick and flawless BST transaction. Just need four more to round out the set although they're all tough HOFers.

Big Thanks also to our Frank W., the kama'aina from Kentucky, for sending some of his Series 6 bad boys back to his ancestral Oahu home.

And . . . a couple of Dormand Yankees including the difficult Mr. Howard to round out the show'n'tell. If anyone has a Skowron they would consider parting with please remember who loves ya.

Afterword: I compiled this post while thinking of the exuberant comments Bill Hedin made the other day about our Hobby. In spite of all the BS and negativity, at the end of the day it's the shared passion for America and baseball and cards that makes it such a great pastime. Thanks for reminding us and hope you enjoyed these cards, Bill.

David - what's really nice about the Bal-Mtl photo is the scoreboard. It looks like it would be sharp and clear in hi-res. There is probably enough info there in theory to determine the date of the game. You would need to find box scores via online newspapers that match the line scores on that scoreboard. Of course it's much easier to do that for a major league game. If you can figure out the date, the corresponding newspaper article might mention that play.

BTW - we were born in the same year in the same place. The big difference is I am still here.

Mark: I cranked up the scanner to 1200 dpi in order to get a better look at the scoreboard. You can see the partial scores of the day's games although it's difficult to distinguish zeroes from other rounded numbers like 3, 8 etc. Seller only indicated circa 1905 so I can't even be sure of the year. Assuming that the Baltimore player is the pitcher, the Orioles only had three lefties from 1903-1907, one being Fred Burchell who may or not may be this guy.

That's very cool. Based on another photo I have, I'd say there is a fair chance that is Burchell.

Toronto got 4 in the bottom of the 4th against Newark. In the Providence Buffalo game, Buffalo got 3 in the bottom of the 1st, Providence got 3 in the top of the 3rd. Jersey city got 3 in the top of the first, 1 in the 3rd and it looks like 2 in the 4th against Rochester. That is probably enought to figure this out. I'm thinking Eastern League box scores would be in The Sporting News, available on line from Paper of Record I believe.

Yes I was born in Chicago, same year as you.

Balt/Montreal "possible" play:

Obvisous no one on base. Infield playing back. Montreal batter tries for a bunt single done the third base line. He bunts it too hard and the third baseman throws him out easily. The pitcher is running to back up play at first. Why there are two first base caches, I have nooooo idea.

Since we're on the subject:
When you want to cross a card over to another grading company, do you send it in the other company's holder, or crack it out? If I were to send this card into SGC in the PSA slab, do you think SGC would be more likely to give it a qualifier just because PSA did?

If you've cracked it out already, it can't be submitted as a crossover -- the second TPG has no proof that it's the same card that the first TPG had graded. Also, when you submit for crossover, you can specify a minimum grade that you'll accept for the crossover -- if the second TPG doesn't feel it merits that grade then they won't crack it out of the first TPG's holder. (that's for PSA at least, I haven't looked into SGC policies for crossover.)

And as someone else mentioned, SGC doesn't use qualifiers -- they just knock down the overall grade, sometimes significantly.

Yes the TPGs are paper and cardboard stock graders, not card graders - a point that Barry has raised in the past. This is never more obvious than in the case of Old Judges.

that is a nice T205 collins and I thought you got a quality buy on it. I had picked up a PSA 4 the week before or I would have chased it pretty hard... honestly the A would have fit my set better. I do think the Collins/Mouth Open is a great card for long-term appreciation. Great pickup, nice strong image.

I picked up this lot of T210's on ebay. I really needed two of the Houston cards for my team set. I'm at 7 of 12 cards now. These are my first new additions since January. I was starting to get discouraged.

I also picked up this 1931 Houston Buffaloes team photo featuring Dizzy Dean and Joe Medwick. I wanted it for quite a while, but it wasn't for sale. When it finally came up for sale a fellow board member sent me a message letting me know and I was able to work out a deal.

What a great array of cards in this month's pickup thread! Gillette N172s and a Wilkinson M116 Cobb, a D304 Matty and an M110 Lajoie, and a Thorpe Zeenut no less. Lots of T210s (love that O.C. Jones) and all those pesky T206s, too.

Here is my second installment in this thread which includes some auction house winnings that have trickled in of late.

Always wanted a Ruth autograph and preferably on a card. Picked this up from an auction house that I had declared I would not patronize. Goes to show you what a slut I am, when it comes to cardboard anyway. Can anyone relate?

http://photos.imageevent.com/kawika_o_ka_pakipika/bbbofsfirstclass/bbhofthefirstclass/large/25Exh%20Babe%20Ruth%20_auto_.jpg

Can't remember if I have posted these two cards which I won in the Legendary auction. I am still not quite over watching that lot of 19 Old Mill cabinets soar into the monetary cosmos a while back in Verkman's auction. This Wingo takes a little of the sting out.
Am pleased to add a Plow Boy as a type card to my collection.

http://photos.imageevent.com/kawika_o_ka_pakipika/bbbofsfirstclass/holygrailcards/large/Old%20Mill%20Cab%20Wingo1.jpg http://photos.imageevent.com/kawika_o_ka_pakipika/bbbofsfirstclass/holygrailcards/large/Plow%20Boy%20Orval%20Overall1.jpg

This acrylic painting of Nap LaWolf was done by Arthur K Miller. It's approximately 14 inches tall. I purchased it online from an art gallery in San Francisco. I think I'm going to put a less ponderous frame on it.

http://photos.imageevent.com/kawika_o_ka_pakipika/bbbofsfirstclass/holygrailcards/large/DSC03157.JPG

http://photos.imageevent.com/kawika_o_ka_pakipika/bbbofsfirstclass/bbhofthefirstclass/large/BST%2027Exh%20WaJo.jpg

Bought the Toleteros Artie Wilson off eBay about the time he passed away the other week. His son, also named Artie, is a local basketball legend here in Honolulu.
I couldn't believe my good luck in landing this T210 Yaeger via the BST from a good ol' boy in Tennessee.

http://photos.imageevent.com/kawika_o_ka_pakipika/bbbofsfirstclass/holygrailcards/websize/50-51%20Toleteros%20Artie%20Wilson.jpg http://photos.imageevent.com/kawika_o_ka_pakipika/bbbofsfirstclass/holygrailcards/websize/T210%20Yaeger_1.jpg

Lastly, picked up this color postcard of Swayne Field which makes a nice companion for the black-and-white job I posted earlier in this thread.

Thanks, Michael. I was pretty happy with the price since the last one in a major auction (only a couple of months ago) was only one numerical grade higher than mine (which I originally bought raw) but that one sold for more than 50% higher than mine.

Maybe the last for December. I know it's not pre-war but that autograph sure is sweet isn't it? :D
