Anyone collect something 'off-kilter'?

Ted's post about the Blue Tints got me thinking about a potential topic. I don't think they are on the top of anyone's list, but I have worked on several low-demand, unpopular issues in the past (E91's, W9316, etc.) that provide a similiar, albeit lower level challange akin to Ted's Blue Tint quest. My collecting bug over the years has definitely gravitated toward these less popular issues.

However, the one that might produce the most frowns amongst fellow collectors would be my collection of side panels of T202's...talk about a piecemeal collection! But still a challenge (there are 144 different ones), and with the bonus of being neither too expensive or bad looking.

Anyone have similiar curious collecting stories?

Sure, I have one. It's in the works and so far has been a big secret (not even my wife knows about it). I started collecting all the T206 red background cards. Okay, what is the catch?

Well, they have to have a non-red background (like orange). After browsing eBay for the past few months for color variations, the project doesn't look so impossible. There are somewhere around 100 different T206 red background cards. So far I have nine with one duplicate (I have time, since my expectations are to live a long life.....well into the 21st century).

By the way, please don't mention this project to my wife. I really do not have time for therapy at the moment.

i've done a little collecting of 'off kilter' T206 backs since Jeff (Comiskey) kindly sent me a T206 'off kilter' back quite a while ago--gratis.
it's fun seeing how grossly miscut the backs can be while the fronts are practically perfect.
i know i've used your term 'off kilter' in 2 ways here!!

Brian - Interesting topic... Here's my off-kilter, inexpensive Type Composites :

I normally collect pre-war Nashville Baseball cards as well as a few other Southern League/Association items, and about a year ago, I purchased a 1909 Spalding and 1910 Reach Guide (which were very beat up I might add) to immerse myself in some old data from the day, and out of that banged up guide came a composite page (if you will) team picture of the Nashville Vols team. This sparked my interest in other guides, and about a year or so later, I am into about 20 or so of these little poor man's paper thin team composites ! They look good in a 4x6 or 5x7 top loader, and I plan on scanning all of them soon for display.... I know a few other collector's actually get these graded, which give them a nice look as well... I enjoy researching the players, looking at variations of teams, etc. - Here are a few samples : You will see a handful of Big Leaguer's in some of these composites.

My whole collection used to be considered 'off-kilter' because I focused on Exhibit cards. Sadly, they are now mainstream and priced to boot. My main oddball collecting right now is:

1. Prewar printing errors: So much can go wrong with prewar printing and I love it all. You got your miscuts

2. Postwar printing flubs: I am working on a Topps run of screwed up cards, ideally really screwed up, for all sports, at least some of the next card showing if it is a miscut. They're actually pretty hard to find, as Topps had strong quality control, but they are out there:

The best part of this quest is that with the emphasis on slabbed high grade I find my cards in dollar bins.

3. 1948-49 Leaf Errors: Leaf had to have the worst QC of the modern era. I mean, their sets just plain stink. I am working on an all-error boxing set.

I also collect printing errors, I don't have many pre war ones. Just a t210 that only got half of the gloss coating, and maybe one or two more.

I do have a lot of newer ones. Loads of fun, and yes, usually in the dollar box or for even less. I have a few pairs of topps cards that are miscut but that were joined on the sheet. Pretty cool to match them up. Another good one is a stack of 3 that were all damaged before cutting. all the same card and all with identical damage. The stack of sheets must have been hit by a fork truck or something.

I also collect the unlicensed cards. I usually have to go all the way to the 10 cent box for those.
