Time to post those September Pickups...

I have a good one in the works, but it's still too premature to post (don't want to jinx it!) Although I've been selling more than buying, here are a couple goodies that are "done deals" to start things off...

Picked up a couple of nice early football helmets lately.
The first is a pretty rare Princeton style helmet that came from the estate of a USC player in the late teens. He wrote/painted the score of the 1918 USC Stanford game on the front, and also wrote scores of other USC vs Cal games and USC vs Stanford games on the helmet as well. It is crazy how little protection the helmet would have provided, as its not very thick leather.

The second helmet is a circa 1910 Draper and Maynard Flat top style leather helmet. I have wanted one of these flat tops for a while, and even though I have started to sell of some of my collection, I decided to go for it.

Hi Mark,

I picked it up off e-bay. The seller's listing title was rather generic and didn't list any of the players. That probably helped me a little concerning the final price:D. It does have some condition issues, but nothing too major. I've seen a few in the past, but they had the sticks completely broken off and the sellers were still trying to get over $500 for them.

Thanks Phil. I collect a lot of oddball issues, domino discs, Helmar and Piedmont stamps, BF2's, S74's, etc. I have always thought the fans were nice pieces and relatively affordable compared to contemporary cards. They display nicely (although I've long run out of display space).

The one I picked up does appear from time to time as does the manager one, but the other one I have only seen the one time.

new royal japanese baseball in the box. great buy i thought for 100 dollars. just cleaned surface dirt off the box. it seems to be earlier than the 1936 date written on the other side. anyone care to throw in their 2 cents.

Great-looking jacket...but that logo is for the meatpacking firm Wilson & Co., not the sporting goods company. You can find examples of that logo used in advertising on ebay.

Happy to pick up this 1936 autographed photo of the famous NBC sports announcer CLEM McCARTHY, who was best known for his radio broadcasts of boxing matches and horse races. McCarthy's account of the famous 1938 Louis-Schmeling fight and his call of Whirlaway winning the 1941 Kentucky Derby were among the memorable highlights on the old-time radio records issued in the 1960s.

Picked up this Gabby Hartnett signed ball. Auto is in very bad shape but you can still make out parts. At the end of the auto it has 20-25, but it sure looks like a 6 before the 20 so maybe the date 6-20-25, looked up the box score from that date and he had a home-run.

Very cool piece Jimmy...but...it's pretty clear why the rest have been put out of thier missery. I don't think I would eat anything served on a table with that in the center...ha ha.

You can't really see anything but the back of Cardwell's head in this photo, but it's really a great shot of the massive throng of ecstatic Cubs fans celebrating the moment with vintage Wrigley Stadium in the background. Cardwell had just been traded from the Phillies to the Cubbies when he no-hit the St. Louis Cards in the second game of the twinbill played on May 15, 1960. It seems to me that the photographer did an unbelieveable job of capturing the moment. A great day in Cubs history!

Not a bad buy for $9 including shipping on eBay tonight....:D

Picked up this today at an antiques fair.. c1930 Univ Chicago Wooden Football Player Toy by Sturdy Mfg. Co. Sturgis Michigan...never seen or heard of it before today...has the 1930 game roster on the back...must have been sold at the stadium as a souvenir...The stick on the back isn't original....you sort of twist the stick back and forth to make it walk...Antique sports toys are remarkably few...In relation to the amount of non sport toys produced....it'll go good in my sports toy collection

I remember when I bought Stagg's personal bookends from his son Paul in 1988...he told me they donated most of his dad's memorabilia to the College of the Pacific in Stockton CA. where he last coached seriously...since Univ. of Chicago banished football which he seemed a little indignant about....said his mom saved everything and there whole garage had been full of his dad's memorabilia

Rob, you prompted me to look into the demise and reinstatement of football at U. Chicago....The internet is fantastic...all this information now at our googletips!!!...Turns out football at U.Chicago was banned by a football hating University President in 1939, then reinstated 30 years later in 1969 thru unusual circumstances of a mass meeting of students to support a deposed Marxist professor.....I know....sounds strange LOL....but ESPN writer Jon Greenberg wrote a good story on it you can read here (http://sports.espn.go.com/chicago/columns/story?columnist=greenberg_jon&id=4585864) below expserpts

"Old Stagg Field, which once sat 50,000 fans, is most famous for being the site of the first-ever nuclear chain reaction in 1942. Football was too barbaric for the school president Robert Hutchins, who called it "an infernal nuisance" when he banned it after the 1939 season. The atom bomb? No, that was fine.".....

"What Nelson didn't know at the time was that this sit-in was a rare occasion at the school, one that lumped thousands of students in one place. A couple of guys on Walter Hass' club football team took the opportunity to start a petition to bring back varsity football after a 30-year absence. They got 1,500 signatures and presented them to the faculty committee, the deans and the board of trustees, according to a Chicago Tribune story. Many thanks to Net54 member Vincent Hecksel (Hexsheroes) who sold me a vintage signed Miles Main 3 x 5 which was on my B/S/T vintage no-hit pitcher want list that I recently posted. Miles Main's professional career amounted to essentially 3 years 1914-1916. He threw a no-hitter against the Buffalo Blues of the Federal League on August 16, 1915 while playing for the KC Packers. Perhaps a few of you recall that a few months ago, on a thread related to baseball tickets, I posted photos of the only known full ticket from 5/2/1917 to the famous "double no-hit" game between Chicago's James Hippo Vaughn and the Cincinnati Reds' Fred Toney. Only an estimated 3,000 fans attended this game at Chicago's Weeghman Park. Many baseball pundits have called this game one of the greatest pitching duels of all time. In this game both Vaughn and Toney successfully pitched 9 innings of no-hit ball. The game ended in the 10th inning when the Red's shortstop Larry Kopf singled off of Vaughn. An error occured, and Vaughn threw home late on Jim Thorpe's swinging bunt allowing the only run of the game. Toney pitched in the bottom of the 10th and didn't allow a base runner, completing a 10 inning no-hitter.

Today I found an outstanding compliment piece. It is a vintage "photo/snapshot" (2 1/2" x 3 1/2") of "Big" Fred Toney that has been signed TWICE (both on the front and on the back!) by Toney in steel tipped fountain pen. Toney's signature alone is insanely tough to find, let alone one that is a vintage signed photo. BTW, Toney's death date was 1953. The name Toney appears at the bottom right corner of this "photo", leading me to believe that it might have been part of a team set of some sort, but I could really use some help from anyone that may be able to let me know of the photos origin.

Mike, I saw your cubs pennant post and had to reply. About 10 years ago I won in auction a similar pennant, had it framed and is currently on my wall. Last week I saw another with an identical smaller pennant. I threw in, what I thought was a very low bid and won the lot. I am posting both pictures and asking if the small pennant is from the same time period.

It's a great time to buy pennants like this on Ebay. I was closely watching those auctions too. If that Cubbie is a duplicate, you could probably stick it in Hunt's next auction and triple your investment.

As a seller, I would avoid ebay right now... like the plague :eek:

Here is one item I got from my grandfather who picked it up at a garage sale. Its the Yomiuri Shimbun Award awarded to the members of the 83 World Series champion Baltimore Orioles. in 84, the world series champions of the ML went to Japan for a exhibition series with the Japanese champions. This is the participation/victory trophy given to the winners, te Baltimore Orioles. It just so happened that the Oriole pitcher, Mike Boedeker was originally from Norway, IA right outside Cedar Rapids. My grandp picked this up at his mothers yard sale. Not pre 1945 but kind of unique.

I am incredibly excited about this last buy. I picked up this trophy yesterday for a very good price.

I saw this and had to buy it. I love old college football memorabilia and this was unique. I was pretty skeptical of it being what I truly wanted it to be and the trophy has completely exceeded what i expected. It is silver plated, has nice qulaity engraving, and has a floral design around the rim of the base and top. The top rim bottom rim, and arms have a hammered effect like a golf ball When I saw University of Wisconsin Football Team, I figured it would end up being something involving intramurals. If not that, it probably had to deal with one of the satelite schools like UW-milwaukee,UW-platteville,inc. If it turned out to be actually Wisconsin Badger related, I figured it was some minor player who was awarded as the trophy is inscribed, "Most Useful Man" as a means of a great practice player.

The trophy was marked Guy M. Sundt and inscribed 1921. When I got home, the name popped up fairly easily on google.

Guy. M Sundt was a Fullback and Punter on the 1921 Wisconsin badgers. He was a 4th year letter winner that year. He was 1st team all big ten and an honorable mention all american.Was the 1921 captain. Finished 4th at the NCAA outdoor meet in the long jump earning all american honors. Went to Ripon College from 1922-24 and was the football,basketball, and track coach as well as the AD. Returned to Wisconsin in 1924. From 24-29 coached the freshmen basketball team. From 1925-26 coached the freshmen baseball team. Was an asst football coach from 1924-48 coaching the backfield including as a staff member on the great 42 team. He was the head cross country coach from 48-49 when his team won 2 bigten titles and a runner up finish at the national meet. From 49-50, he coached the track team that finished 7th at the national outdoor meet. Was a longtime asst. AD at UWMadison and was the Athletic Director from 1950 until his death in 1955. He was a innagural member of the UW athletics hall of fame He was the team MVP for the 1921 season and I believe I am in possesion of his MVP trophy. I am ecstatic about this find as big ten is my thing. I have no idea about value or information on something like this. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Sorry for the poor paragraph that would make a english teacher cringe

I got this vintage Reach ball for my collection and photo gallery. Great stamps, haven't figured out all the signatures though. According to the seller, it contains the following sigs:

DAVE KEEFE, VINCE CASTINO, BUDDY ROSAR, BERT SHEPARD, BUCK ?, ALLIE REYNOLDS, SAM CHAPMAN, RALPH ?, FRANK HAYES, JEFF HEATH.

And it's a shame about the big "50" someone wrote over the pres. stamp with permanent marker. Can't figure out what it means. Most of the players played for AL teams in the 40s, not many seemed to be playing at the time these baseballs were used. So I'm guessing it was signed at some special event.
