The same seller also has a green backed Sweet Caporal Wid Conroy for auction at the same time.

FAKE! I always suspect something when the best photo available for an item is taken from the Hubble telescope.:D

Good catch Larry. No doubt it's fake. Bidders should learn about these fake cards before they step up to the plate & bid on them. I feel bad for the one bidder. Hopefully the card will be removed from the e-bay auction.

There should be a new eBay rule that if you take a picture of a card from across the room with your cell phone camera it has to automatically be listed in the reprint category...

An eBayer since 1997 with feedback of over 11,000 and still hasn't learned to crop a photo?

Also, I don't know what is written on the backs of the cards at the bottom but it sure doesn't look like a factory number to me.

Being new to prewar that scares me. I expect to stay away from people with low feedback but people with that much feedback selling this junk makes a newbie like me nervous.

There's nothing like a little knowledge. That is one of the best reasons to read this board and acquire the shared knowledge of posters about fakes so you can discern one when you see it. The Matty is obviously a fake. There was a recent entry on ebay, an expensive pre-war card going for a lot of money which didn't look right to me. I emailed the seller and asked him for a guarantee that if I purchased it and sent it to SGC or PSA and it came back counterfeit that he would refund my money and he refused. I didn't bid on it and hours before some sucker got hooked for a bundle, it disappeared from ebay. Happens more than you think. Always ask for that guarantee is my advice.

The card is surely original, the ultra-rare Sovereign blue back version. ;)

Asking a seller for a guarantee isn't a bad idea, but a scammer is a scammer IMO. If they are knowingly trying to sell a fake card I'm betting they will either refund your money and relist it trying to rip someone else off that won't get it graded or they will renege on the agreement and try to say you altered it in some manner before you submitted it for grading. If they have a will to rip somebody off they will find a way.

Things are getting bad on ebay! Just look at a completed search of 52 Mantles that sold recently:

-There are more but you get the idea. There is a .01% chance that any of those are real and some of the sellers are selling the same card again as I type this.

I hope someone really wasn't dumb enough to actually pay $6500 for the first one considering the front scan is of a raw card and the back scan is cropped scan of a legit card in a PSA holder. The second was was sold as "unknown" under the original/reprint section which should be an obvious red flag. The third one was purchased at a "flee market" and the guy says he is selling it as a reprint, but it still went for $620. The fourth one had the typical "I don't know anything about it, but I'm selling it as a reprint" line too and the last guy should ask how his uncle pulled a fake Mantle from an original pack. If these people don't learn "If it looks too good to be true it probably is" they are going to find out "that a fool and his money are soon parted".

Grandpa is a con man.... wrinkly old schister!

Not in a million years would i even consider bidding on the T206 card.... if you are dumb enough to bid, you don't deserve to own a real one.

Its like buying ocean front property in Wyoming! Line up, must be plenty of buyers! Free autographed Jimi Hendrix CD with every purchase!

Just for grins, I emailed the seller telling him it was a reprint given it's a blue back. Here is his reply.

"Hello, I would suggest you do some more research. I just reviewed many graded T-206 Baseball Tobacco cards, Piedmont and found as mine, a blue back printing. Also, because of an illness almost 13 years ago I auctioned off my baseball collections of over 10,000 authentic and antique baseball items. Last year I sold on Ebay over 200 T-212 tobacco baseball cards. I am not misrepresenting any items. I've been on Ebay almost since the start, just short of 14 years. I'm not angry, but I know what I am doing. Thank you and enjoy your day.

P.S. I've also dealt with dealers around the Nation with a clean reputation for items auctioned or sold. Evern Sotherbys has sold some of my stuff.

- auctiongoofy"

Gee, I never knew Piedmonts had blue backs. And who am I to question Sothebys?"

I shot him a quick e-mail last night and said this card is a reprint, this was his response:

Why? Auctiongoofy

I sent back that card only was printed in red, I would stay far away from this guy, nomatter what the card is...
