Pretty interesting read (along with some good photos) on Hank Gowdy, I thought:

I love the old photo of him playing ball in France.
Not that it's a beauty or anything, but I just picked this up this week.

He was a war hero and the star of the 1914 Miracle Braves ... Happy birthday Hank!

Frank,
Great letter. I don't how well the "kid" ended up playing baseball but he became one heck of a preacher. :)

Thank you, Jeff. Rob's article helps me put the 1948 Columbus, OH letter in perspective with what was happening then in Hank's life.
One more....

I came across this account of Gowdy's war record ...
Colonel B W Hough, commander of the 166th is quoted as saying that Gowdy was one of his top men in a regiment of many great soldiers. “Every outfit ought to have somebody like Hank,” said Colonel B W Hough, commander of the 166th Infantry Regiment. “The boys idolize him and he gets them all stirred up with his baseball stories. He helps ‘em forget about the terror of war. He carried the flag and . . . he was one of them who heaved gas bombs at the enemy . . . he was fantastic!”

Can you imagine the danger in carrying the colors in World War I?! Wow.
