hey everyone,
thanks for all your responses in my first thread. i just won an auction on ebay and want to know how i did.
Christy Mathewson T206
Black Cap
Polar Bear Back
SGC 30
couldn't get it to copy from their site. centering is pretty much perfect. there is a crease from the top that goes about 1/3 of the way down the card. back is very good with a few spec of white where ink has been rubbed off. top right of front has a small brown discoloration near the top right corner. all corners are slightly frayed with the top left being more rounded off than the rest.

got it for $213.62. Standard? Good buy? Whoops?

Luke,

You did fine, but in this hobby the bottom line is..............to be both happy and excited with a purchase, plus as a bonus to have an urgent desire to see your mail carrier. That is all that matters. Enjoy the moment, that is a classic pose which I never get tired of looking at. Congrats! Here is the card you purchased:

Lovely Day...

Hard to say without seeing it, but I'd say at that grade, you got a decent deal. Welcome to The Monster.

*edit, I see the pic now...looks like you did pretty well. Definately a good card to start with.

Seems like you got a good deal. The crease IMO doesn't take away much from the overall eye appeal. As long as you are happy with it, I would say you did a good job.

Iggy always does you right in my experience on the T206 front. Nice pickup.

Dave,

Thank you for the kind words, but I didn't sell him the card. I found the image on eBay. Perhaps, one day me and Luke will cross paths; afterall, he now has to shoot for the "white cap." Just go slow Luke, you don't want to waste all your current reserves of testosterone on T206 cards.

Lovely Day...

Now that you have had your first fix enjoy the high as long as you can because it might not last to long !

Great buy Luke!
I loved reading Iggyman's way of describing if you made a good buy or not. I too love that feeling of looking for my latest pick up to arrive in the mail. It is that same feeling I use to get opening a 35 cent pack of Topps and pulling my favorite player Don Mattingly when i was a kid.

Have fun everyone taming the Monster!

As you were describing the card, and before I looked at the price, I
was thinking $200 range. Looks like you got a fair deal and a nice
card of a legendary player. It's nice that the crease doesn't hit
Matty's face, too. Congrats!

That's a great first card. My first T206 was a Beals Becker!

My first was Killian Pitching, which I got about 1983. I then picked up a Polar Bear card in the early 90's before diving in for real about four years ago. Crazy set(s), very addictive.

I think you did well with your first T206 purchase. Mathewson is my favorite player in the T206 set. So much so, in fact, that I named my second son Mathewson. And I still get a kick out of calling him Matty.

My first T206 were a pair of HOFers -- Mathewson White Cap and Bender Portrait. I bought them from a guy in 1997 who was looking for extra money for a Vegas trip. They were part of his grandfather's collection. I am sure I made out better than him all these years later. I am quite happy to say that I still have them.

Thanks a lot for your input. Those cards are beautiful. I like hearing the stories of how people found their favorite cards. And by the way, I found your website before I this forum. I went through a lot of the content and enjoyed it quite a bit.

Thank you very much. I was trying to get into the auction and copy a scan of the card, but every time I clicked on any completed auction on ebay, my browser immediately navigates away. Is there a trick to seeing completed listings? Thanks.
