Recently picked up a kind of interesting item related to Chappie Johnson who was a star catcher in the early Negro Leagues and later a manager of a team named after him, the "Chappies". It consists of a scorebook with several of the Chappie's 1933 games as well as some period newspaper articles.

After Chappie Johnson's playing days were over, he went on to manage several teams over the years. This was from his 1933 team and consisted mostly of fringe players or players on their way up, or towards the end of their careers. This team played in an otherwise all-white league that was located in central New York state. The newspaper articles that came with the scorebook hold some intersting tidbits of information about some of the Negro League players from this team. The most notable player, Jess "Nip" Winters started out playing for the Chappies. Half way through the season Johnson released Winters who then signed with their toughest rival Fulton, an all white team.

The players listed in the scorebook change through the season as they dropped and added them. One of the players they picked up was Louis Santop, another early star who was near the end of his career.
