The little blue thing to the right of "New;" at a quick glance I always thought it was a hand pointing to the words. Is that your take or am I missing something?

I believe it is a hand with a finger pointing gesture. It was a common printing practice around the time used to draw attention to something specific on an advertisement, in this case the word "New."

I always thought it was a hand, but why is the thumb also pointing?
Perhaps it is the long lost eighth horizontal pose.

I always thought it was one of those "right this way" finger point gestures?

I always though it was a hand and finger.
