I know Christy Mathewson began his career with the Cincinnati Reds before he was traded to New York. And then he returned to Cincinnati at the end of his career as a player/manager (mostly manager). That got me wondering. Are there any pre-war cards that feature Mathewson in a Cincinnati uniform?

I know there's some kind of premium that does and I think there might be a strip card. Don't know of any in mainstream sets though.

I checked his careers stats and it shows that he ended his career in Cincy. He actually only pitched one game for the Reds and he won it. He was 35 years old at the time.

That was the famous Brown/Mathewson duel Sept 4th, 1916. It was the final game pitching for both of them.

I thought I remembered seeing a M101-6 with him. I know I have seen a card with him in a Cincy hat, it was a head shot and he really looked old (must have been the mustard gas poisoning). Maybe someone else has a better memory than me, sorry!

I don't see any stats showing him playing with Cincy prior to coming up with the Giants in 1900.

He was with Taunton in 1899 with a pitching record of 2 wins and 13 losses.

Matty was with the Giants, taken by the Reds in December 1900 as a Rule V guy, then traded back to the Giants later in December 1900.

So there likely wouldn't be any material from that early stretch of his career. But since he did play his last game with the Reds, there may be materials (photos) of that one appearance.

Early is his career, Mathewson was sent back to the Minor Leagues and was claimed (drafted?) by Cincinnati. New York decided to give Mathewson another shot and traded Amos Rusie to Cincinnati for him. Not sure what Cincinnati saw in the washed up Rusie - he would not win another game in the Big Leagues. Mathewson, on the other hand...

Thanks for the clarification.

Since he was traded and back in less than a month (December) that's why he wouldn't have any Cincy stats.

Isn't he with the Reds on his Fleischmann's card?

Isn't he with the Reds on his Fleischmann's card?

I just found a pic of his Fleischmann's card online. It's with NY. (see below)

I haven't been able to find a pic of the M101-6 as of yet, but I will keep looking.

Thanks for the suggestions. Can anyone think of anything else?

Beckett's M101-6 online checklist, which lists 108 cards, does NOT include a Mathewson, for what it's worth.

The current Legendary auction has a postcard with Mathewson as the Reds manager. Link is here: http://legendaryauctions.com/LotDetail.aspx?lotid=111332

Yes, I picked that one up as well as the one pictured below. This one here is neat because the back has his entire career stats.

Thanks to everyone for keeping an eye out for these!
