View Full Version : T206 Hustler brand.... a myth put to rest?

Since Jim R commented in another thread about T206 Hustler being a myth, which it is, I figure I will start a little thread about it, instead of going off on a tangent in the same thread, as normal. Having the 1953 and 1967 (revised) edition of the ACC's, I notice that Burdick had Hustler baseball cards listed in the earlier edition, next to T206, but not the newer one. I think there were 1-2 editions between those so maybe someone can check and see if it was listed in one of those also? We have many new members so here is a relevent index card again too, which is a checklist from the 1950's-early 1960's by Walt Corson, who was a good friend of Burdick. (if Burdick really had any as, from what I have read, he was rather reclusive). When Walt made this checklist they obviously thought it would still show up. But like I say, maybe since it's not in the last (I think '67 was the last) ACC edition, maybe they had already come to the conclusion that it wasn't a brand with a baseball player. So maybe we have kept the myth going without knowing it?

note- Ty Cobb brand is listed on the index card and all ACC's ;)

I'm still holding out on this one. Maybe they are as rare as the Fans T231 and it got lost.

Burdick didn't remove it from the 1967 edition.

Burdick didn't remove it from the 1967 edition.

My mistake. After re-reading the opening in the book, the last edition was 1960. It wasn't listed in the 1960 edition but was in the 1953 edition. regards

I meant that he had died by then, someone else would have removed it, But since he died in 1963, not so sure

That index card is awesome!! And it really makes you wonder if Walt had actually seen one for him to include it on that index card,as a back to obtain.Right along side of the Ty Cobb back!! Thanks Leon !!

I am pretty sure Burdick knew that the Hustler brand existed and thought he would one day find one with a baseball player on the front and added it to his list.
I think there may have also been reports of somebody somewhere having
one, but it has never been confirmed.

Only Hustler I have has a flag of Turkey on the front.

Are hustler backed cards rare??? I seen a few in an antique shop a while back and they all had flags and such on them. I think they were about $2 each and in great shape. Or do they need ball players on them?????

Hustler backed T59's aren't exactly common, though they certainly aren't rare. I have about 50-100 of them. They usually get $2 - $5 in VGEx condition.

What seems to be almost as rare as a Hustler backed Baseball card is a Hustler Little Cigar pack...I am not sure I have seen another though they might be out there......regards

Leon - it is a pretty rare pack. There was one on eBay a few months back but I can't recall seeing others.
