...wanted to ask a question here about a current item up for sale but did not do so in fear someone else might detect that auction and bid up the price and/or worse yet win it? This is a situation I currently face (it's actually a post-war auction) and feel conflicted about what I should do as I want to learn more about his card but also do not want to spur interest in the item I would like to win...

Ask a few people through emails or PM's.....

Thanks Leon, but who's to say that person wouldn't scout out the card---and could you blame them if they discovered the 52 Mantle Topps RC that you found in a completely wrong category?

This falls under the label of Bazaar .....

Minty can't go to Post War.

Can't e- mail

Can't PM

Why is he at Pre War?

Me thinks Minty is in deep doo doo. :)

Pat, PM sent. I know a lot about post-war cards, but no longer deal in them....don't own a single one. Late 40s through late 50s is my forte....

I'm not an active bidder, and assume no one here is going to ask me about a Jean Shrimpton photo anyway.

Yeah. You mean because Joe P. doesn't know how to spell "bizarre?"

Pat- at some point you have to trust someone. I know I don't collect, or buy and sell, post war at all so would be a candidate to help. I think if you PM'd a few people you trust, and asked them not to say anything, they would oblige. I have done that dozens of times and so far so good, I think :). You can either ask someone personally, post on the board or try to figure it out yourself. The only other option is just to forget about the card. There are your options...so good luck my friend.

As for Joe P.....I wish we could have a little less antagonism on the board. But with all of the great lawyers, and a few others, I doubt that will ever happen. It seems like almost every question nowadays ends up with a smart ass answer.....and that isn't so good. Hey, a little comedy is cool...but I would like to see more substance sometimes. I can wish can't I?
Jim VB- this statement wasn't directed at you, since you posted above I don't want you to think that. Most times you are civil, harmless and ruining humanity.....

Yeah, yeah, yeah! I take offense at that and will be leaving the board, as soon as I sell all my cards (3% extra..., etc., etc., etc.)

Is it Bizarre, or is it "Bizarro"?

Do you think when Charles Bray and Lionel Carter started Net54 back in the 60's that they used to post Honeymooners clips?

Not exactly. They would just cut pictures out of TV Guide and mail them to each other.

Pat - Getting good imformation and a little advise before you bid on something your not sure of, is very much worth any down side issues that you mentioned. I/we do it all the time with a group of guys that Ive know for a long time. Always better to know for sure.

Good luck in your collecting.

Minty,

Why don't you just send a message to Fred, either here or ont he bay.

You know that he will know about it.

Plus, he will not be bidding against you because whatever card it is, he already has a better one in his back room!

Ha Ha, that's a classic shot. I have known Bizarro Kramer, by the way, since we were kids. ( my only Seinfeld connection)

As far as asking for help on the board. I don't hesitate to ask questions. I had severtal questions about T210 cards a while back and lost every single auction I was bidding on to NET54 members that week. I did wonder later about the fact that I may have garnered undue interest in those lots by asking on the board, but hey I needed to know som einfo and others opinions on the set. I can't compete with most of the buyers/dealers on this board anyway financially. I will just wait a few months and hope those T210's ( or most of them ) will show up on ebay agin being sold by whomever bought them last month. The only problem with that being that a card I could have won for $49 will suddenly be BIN for $149...so the chances of me actually buying it are next to NIL !
It's easy to manipulate certain dealers and collectors on this board through your queries too. I posetd that I was starting to collect a certain card and team not too long ago, and received some PM's offering sales.....also some people listed the exact cards I was referring to for sale in the BST and on Ebay the very next day. Could have been just a coincidence, but I doubt it.

in question is not a "What is this? What year/co.?, etc." I just need to know what it has sold for in previous auctions. My terapeak has no record of sale for this item in its current form

Ebay will give history of sales in the last 15 days. If it's more thinly traded than that try VCP. It is a subscription service that tracks sales through several auction houses on graded cards.

Even if the card you're not looking at isn't graded, you can figure a range.

Let me see if I've got this right .....

Minty comes on asking a nebulous Post War question, on a Pre War forum ... :)

Leon tries to uncloud the question, and recommends e-mail and PM's ... nice try.

Minty comes back stating that he didn't want to tip his hand with e-mails and PM's ... at which point I ask myself ... "Why is he asking the question to begin with?"

Then Mr Clean decides to become a spelling teacher ... :) :) :) :) :) :)
Bazaar - Bizarre ... who cares? ... personally, I luv the Bizarro bit.

It was an invisible post war question, in what use to be a pre war forum.

Leon, how many smiley faces do I have to put down, in order to unstiffen you? :)

Totally useless info, but actually Jeremy Piven played George in the NBC pilot episodes. Bizarro George was some other actor....

That auction was in the proper category and sold for an appropriate price. What was with all of the cloak and dagger, and your PMs to me saying you couldn't disclose it because it was worth THOUSANDS???? Mole hill, meet Mountain. I would never have bid on an item like that...not interested in the box, and just one five second glance at the seller's feedback would've kept me away. He has ZERO history of selling anything even close to this expensive.

You don't think a '60s single baseball card only guy wouldn't have bid that sucker up had it been double listed in sports card mem singles 60s?? Point was I didn't know what the appropriate price and WASN'T trying to get one in the OT but only wondered whether others had that dilemna of wanting to ask questions about a current auction. Glance at his feeback also shows that his negs were for petty crap and it was possible you could've won a clean box with the Mick and if submitted to BGS with high grade could sell for a couple K???
