This is a team photo of my wife's grandfathers baseball team. Charles Lloyd Brown was born in 1895. My wife's mother ( Hester Brown) was born in 1922 and I am sure the photo is taken before that.
I have done a little research and have come up with very little-just want to share it and if anyone does know anything -please tell

Jim ... That is one outstanding image of an early team .....

I'm willing to bet that one, or a few of our image aficionados will add info about this team image.

OK image diggers ... Go get 'em!

I looked at these threads, the images are gone, but the entries by the diggers are thought provoking.

Most of the guys who like to identify old photos like these are over on the Memorabilia side so I may move this over there if it doesn't get any action here.

the guy sitting front row far left reminds me of Jeremy J. Nashvillebaseball
(Hi Jeremy). I have only met you once at the National but he looks like a relative of yours. Any relatives from Okalahoma? Looks Native American.

Why not place it over on the Memorabilia side, and keep it over here.
That way we'll have a double barrel activity in the Bull Pen.

It isn't every day that a baseball forum can help a fellow member with a personal baseball research.

Now that's what makes a forum, a fun forum.

The competition is on.

The Memorabilia Guys vs The Cardoholics.

Go Sickos Go!

The cadet collars on jerseys appeared in the major leagues beginning, I believe, in 1909 (see for ex. Cubs), along with the vertical lettering. It did not stay popular long - just a few years. (see also PCL teams for similar).

I would say U of Oklahoma is a good guess if your wife's grandfather may have attended - directly contacting their athletic dept miay be a good place to start.

- Interesting you mention this b/c after looking at that photo, it reminded me of my Dad as there are a few photo's of my father we have when he was younger that look very similar to that dude and yes, we have Native American Indian in us ! Also, English and German !! Our families are from Kentucky/Tennessee area. I do have some relatives in Oklahoma, but not sure of origins.... You never know. That fella could be my great uncle ! lol

This is my first visit to your land.

It's an interesting site, and I'm glad that the two forums are collaborating on this project.
This mutual research challenge to help a fellow member, will be aided by the specialty areas of certain members, and the drive, and determination of the others.
The challenge is there, and the promise of satisfaction is a give.

Great to meet you guys.

Let's see if we can find out more about Charles Lloyd Brown, and his Okla team.

Nice photo!

Looks like some decal bats in the photo... If you could provide some close-up high res scans of the decals, some clues may be revealed. Also, the hats appear to have a pin or a patch that may provide some clues if some close-ups can be provided.

McAlister Oklahoma
Jim: If the photo was taken in McAlester Okla. that's where I would start. Per the internet there is only one high school there, namely McAlester HS. Might it be associated with one of the reservations? Learned that Pepper Martin was from McAlester but he'd have been too young, born in '05. Here is a link to the McAlester Chamber of Commerce-maybe someone at the local library can pick up the trail (918-426-0930). A worthwhile mystery to be solved, freeing your wife's grandfather from the darkness of history.

Here are some great links that are full of info and some nice pics of Oklahoma Sports teams. I think it is really well done and it mentions several local teams as well as High School competion info. I think if you really dig into all the info, you might find the missing link.

Bob Burke and Larry O'Dell of the Oklahoma Historical Society really have done a great job.

At the bottom of each page are "quick links" for Golf, Sports, Indains, etc. all pertaining to Oklahoma.

Below are two links: One for Baseball and one for Football. Football link has a Great photo.

Hope this helps

My roots are in Oklahoma and I love seeing this photo. My great-uncle was playing on a team in Okemah in the teens and my uncle was on a great American Legion team there in the thirties.

Bob Burke, Kenny Franks and Royse Parr created an outstanding 1999 book titled "Glory Days of Summer: The History of Baseball in Oklahoma." Curt Gowdy wrote the foreword. The first organized game on record in Oklahoma was played in 1882 when it was still Indian Territory. The book covers baseball in all forms: townball, college, high school, town teams, barnstorming, sandlot, semipro and minor league baseball. I didn't find any uniforms like these pictured in the book.

McAlester had minor league teams in 1905 (Missouri Valley League), 1906 (South Central League), 1907 (Oklahoma-Arkansas-Kansas League) and 1908 (Oklahoma-Kansas League). From 1914-1926, the McAlester Miners played in the Western Association.

Here's a photo of the 1910 Oklahoma University Team (note the hound dog mascot at front). For what it's worth, the 1913 Oklahoma A&M team (today Okla State) don't resemble your style either. Good luck in the quest!

Rick P -

Do you have any photo's of the University of Central Oklahoma or Oklahoma Central Normal from that time period? They regularly played OU and A&M during the time frame that the photo was taken.

Here's the 1896 team (when the school was named Territorial Normal) and a shot of a Central State player presumably from the 1920s.
