I am aware that population reports exist through PSA & SGC, however I cannot locate them at the individual grading co. website. Do you need to be a member or how does one locate the pop. reports? Is there a particular web address I can use to see the pop. reports at PSA & SGC?

Thanks in advance for any help!

With SGC, all you have to do is register and it is free. Then look under Resources on the information bar near the top of the website for the population report.

With PSA, you must become a member and pay to access their population report. However in the past, not sure about today, one could join a month at a time and that monthly membership allowed you to look at the population report. To find PSA's population report button, look to the left side on the main screen

Hope this helps,

Jantz

1. They do not keep track of crossovers.

2. There are more raw cards in private hands, than found on the registry.

The major companies do end up sending crossover flips to each other that eventually get removed from the pop reports.

This is a topic that interests me as I own one of the SGC-graded Dreyfuss cards. I see that there are 22 graded examples by SGC and PSA combined. I would be curious to learn what board experts believe to be the approximate raw population. Thanks. Mark

Do the major companies know ... when a slab has been cracked, and the card sent in for another shot?

What do you think skews the pop numbers more?

Raw cards in private collections or
Cards from one company removed from slab and sent to another company?

Both actions have the opposite effect on the pop reports.

We thought this was the case, but as of last year, SGC said they had never received a package of crossed flips from PSA.

The answer to your question is easy ... it should be obvious even to a newbee.

1. If you crack open a slab and send the card for a hopefull bump to the same grader, or any grader ... the card is being counted again.
An inaccurate count, and pop is being created.

2. Before the graders came over from the coin hobby, the baseball cardoholics new how to grade their own cards, they didn't need a grader to tell them what they already knew.
The non uniformity in grading, was no different than what it is now. :)

The authentication edge goes to the dealers, and collectors prior to the coming of the Middleman (graders).
Simply stated, when it came to the raw cards, they looked at, handled, and even smelled more card sets than the sides, and corners the middlemen are good at.

I'm willing to bet that there are more raw sets out there held by knowledgeable collectors, than you think.

My thought are the same. I would assume that there are more raw cards than cards being broken out and re-submitted. I just felt that it was both an interesting and important point when trying to determine the inaccuracy of the pop reports.
