View Full Version : So who knows about the Burr McIntosh photos?

Just over 100 years ago there was a magazine... it had great photographs in it, and the pages were holepunched and held together by a ribbon. About 12" x 6", with 3 small holes in one of the long borders for the ribbon. The magazine was designed to be disassembled. The company even sold cardboard frames for the images... it was called the Burr McIntosh Monthly. Burr McIntosh was editor April 1903 through March of 1905; Clark Hobart was editor June of 1906 through December of 1909. I don't know about the interim, and I think the publication folded in early 1910. In addition to a magazine publisher, he was a reporter, owned a coal business, appeared in Broadway plays, moved west where he made and appeared in movies, and he was a radio talk show host.

As best as I can tell, there are 10 baseball images; if anyone is aware of others please let me know. The images are listed here, by their captions, alphabetically. The Champions and West Point are on opposite sides of the same sheet, which makes collecting a bit awkward. The Champions is the Boston World Champions from the 1903 World Series, Cy Young stands tall. Only the New York Giants image has the players identified, including McGraw, McGinnity, Mathewson, Van Haltran, and McGann. Iron Man McGinnity is the only image of an individual player of which I'm aware.

So... anyone know of any of the magazine dates for any of these, before I go bleary-eyed in a library one day? Anyone aware of any others??

Thank you!!!

I can see that is Hughie Jennings on the right with the Cornell team.

Someone has suggested that Douglas MacArthur, left fielder for West Point in 1903, is on that West Point photo, 4th from the right, left hand on his hip and right hand on a bat handle. Know anything about that?

And are the 1903's of Harvard and Yale on the same sheet, or separate?

I'll get some scans of these up, eventually.

Here's 1903 Yale.
If anyone has the 1904 Yale please post.
Jimmy O'Rourke, son of HOFer James O'Rourke, is 6th from the right.

Thanks for posting Frank. Here are the Champions. I am still trying to identify some of the players. I love the shot of Candy LaChance (6th in from left). Of course, the West point photo is on the back. Let me know if you want me to scan that photo.

The back of the 1903 Yale picture is blank.

Interesting thread, Frank.

I have been checklisting these for some time and have identified 14 baseball-related plates. To help answer some of the questions, I have uploaded a Checklist and Gallery at www.oldcardboard.com/m/burr-mcintosh/burr-mcintosh-list.asp (Checklist) and at www.oldcardboard.com/m/burr-mcintosh/burr-mcintosh-gal.asp (Gallery) to the Old Cardboard website. Will add a Profile page in the next week or so.

In all, Burr McIntosh published 86 issues in consecutive months from April 1903 thru May 1910. Those with baseball theme are only found in 1903, 1904 and one in 1905.

Paul C.--the 1904 Yale team image is in the gallery

Steve Murray--I have been unable to verify that the NY American team is from June 1904 but don't believe that it is. Could you please re-verify and let me know? Thanks.

I'll check it out when I get home Lyman.

Would also like to point out that while we here on this Forum are more interested in baseball there are a number of very nice football pictures of college teams and players as well.

Long ago, this was debated... Was Old Cy ever ID'd in this shot?

I remember. I think if anyone could have been Cy it would be the sixth player from the right. No one else is close.

I knew someone on here would know about these rascals. And Lyman, you are seriously to blame for me asking, I was about to put together an article for you. Now that you've quit outbidding me on these I've been able to pick up a few. So Lyman, what date / magazine issue do you suggest for the NY Americans?

Frank, my best guess is October or November 1904. The NY Americans image is labeled 1904 and has a 1904 copyright date on it. Unless I missed something, I've pretty much eliminated all other issues in 1904.

Call me at 512-231-9594 (or send your number and I will be happy to call you) to discuss an article about the Burr McIntosh baseball images.

Yes, Steve, that guy with the dark sweater and his right arm across the shoulders of the guy next to him, that is Cy Young. The guy to the left of Mathewson is George Van Haltren; he's sporting a mustache; and he'd be a good addition to the Hall of Fame.

Lyman, I'll give you a call in a day or two.

Here's the other Yale image.

One thing I like about that Yale team above is that 'junior' with the 1906 sweater on the end at the right.

Here's Princeton.

And the 1904 Pennsylvania team.

And the 1905 Pennsylvania team.

I'm pretty sure that guy is not Cy Young (that's Long Tom Doran who he has his arm around). It's probably Duke Farrell sans mustache:

Mark, you're breaking my heart!

So if that isn't Cy Young, do you reckon he's in there, or not. What about Jimmy Collins, is he there?

Sorry Frank :(. A hi-res scan is coming way way within a few days. I'll post ID's as best as I can tell when I get it.

Hi all,

I believe this publication issued two variations of the photos: Ones with holes that were bound by string as part of the magaizne and those for which you could send away. These pictures probably would be comsidered premiums and don't, I believe, have the holes.

Hope this helps...

Here's one of the NY team, that was mounted onto a backing:

I apologize if this image is too large. Let me know and I will resize or remove it!

Mark, were you able to compile a roster of the Boston Champs?
