I`ve asked this question on various sports forums and thought it might be a worthwhile topic here as well. If you were to build a "Mt Rushmore" using any 4 cards which would they be? Also, please include a few reasons for a given selection. With the knowledge on this board I`m betting we can come up with some impressive thoughts. Thanx

52 Topps Mantle
65 Topps Namath
79 OPC Gretzky
86 Fleer Jordan

No reason for any explaination of these choices. The football and the baseball could be debated. The Mantle could be replaced by the Wagner and the Namath by Nagurski or Jimmy Brown. But that my choice and I'm stickimg with them.

I'll stay all baseball:

N173 Old Judge Anson
T206 Wagner
1933 Goudey Ruth
1952 Mantle

I would have loved to go with the 4 of the first 5 inducted, but these cards are my choice.

I would say from left to right I would have a:

T206 Walter Johnson portrait
T205 Addie Joss
Cobb (not a card but one of his on field photo poses where he is slightly looking off. Very nice young Cobb photo)
T205 Mathewson

I would call it MT. WACM

I'd go with the N172 Anson (in uniform), T206 Wagner, 1933 Goudey Lajoie and 1952 Topps Mantle. That would make for one heck of a four card collection IMO!

Forgetting for the moment the intricacies of a full body image versus a portrait, here is my selection for the most significant "Rushmore 4" epitomizing modern day sports:

Babe Ruth 1921 Exhibit The quintessential baseball player
Jim Thorpe M101-5 The olympian who excelled in many sports
Jackie Robinson 52 Topps The man who broke the color barrier in America's
sport
Pele Any card showing his in the air backward scisssor kick
The most well known personality in the #1 international game

Here are my top 4 and why:
T206 Honus Wagner - the most important card in the history of the hobby.
T206 Ty Cobb (red background) - maybe the most popular and sought after pre-war card.
T206 Walter Johnson (portrait) - most frequently voted the best looking card ever produced.
1952 Topps Mickey Mantle - THE definitive post-war and most recognizable card in collecting.
I completely discount any votes for cards from ANY other sport (esp. basketball, hockey and soccer????) than baseball. It all started with BASEBALL card collecting and will ALWAYS be #1 hands down.
Feel free to disagree, that's what this forum is all about!:)

Keep in mind this is my personal "Mount Rushmore" so I am a little bias on this subject:

1. M 101-4/5 Ruth Rookie: It's not my intention to spark the 1914 News vs the M 101/4-5 Ruth rookie debate :). But it is my choice because he is in a Red Sox uniform.

2. E107 Cy Young: Again with Boston AL.

3. T-206 Walter Johnson Portarit: As mentioned above, what a great looking card and I have more respect for the Big Train after doing a lot of reading about his "Wiesner Wonder" days. What a gentleman.

And T-207 Bushelman! Just kidding but boy this one has been tough for me.
Anyone got one?

4. 1952 Topps Mantle: I don't own one but wouldn't mind. I remember in April 1980 standing at the front of the stage in St Charles, MO (St.Louis, Holiday Inn) as a kid as they "instant auctioned" a 52 Mantle. There was a hush in the room because the card had just set record prices a month or so earlier in Philly.
