I never bought a game used bat before, but I would love to pick up this one for my Van Slyke collection:

Is there a way to tell if it was really game used? I appreciate anyone that can chime in.

Thanks - Rob

The markings on both ends of the bat give it away, as does the model and the evidence of game usage on the barrel, without going into too much detail on modern era gamer characteristics.

Plus, I have a couple Van Slyke bats in my collection from various stages in his career, and this bat matches up with one of mine.

For future reference, company shipping records are available where it can be determined if a player ordered a specific type of bat for game use. Folks at gameuseduniverse.com have the records and you can ask there. This info doesn't itself authenticate a bat, but helps separate the wheat from the chaff.

that particular color finish is actually known as a "Van Slyke Finish" by H&B

I have a game used Kirby Puckett game bat that is that same C243 model. Has anyone else seen someone put 34 32 C243 in marker on the end of a bat before? (I never have). I usually only see the players number in marker on the end. Looks nice!
