Bidding on this T206 Carl Lundgren PSA 7 is up to almost $20,000 with buyer's premium. Is this just straight up fake bidding? I've owned this card in the past....figure it is worth $2-3K myself.

Lots of bizarre prices in this auction.

Could not agrree more....oddly enough, one of the lots I bid on just closed. And I feel it is a rarer card than the Lundgren yet went for 1/15th the price.

Um, yeah. I'm guessing there might be some bidding parties going on tonight. Or someone let Bill Mastro into the computer room.

Bidding parties? What does that mean? My bet is that the Lundgren bids are fake. Why would anyone pay $19,200 for a $2-3k card?

If not; then being a one in three; you probably got 2 registry guys going after that card

when the card is more important to them than money.

I feel like I've seen one 100 times on eBay listed by jaysace for a much lower price that didn't sell. Am I wrong in my recollection?

Hi JP,

I was thinking of bidding on the Brown (Washington) but the card looked short in the holder and I suspect it may have been trimmed. The Lundgren bidding certainly seems suspicious. I agree with you.

I think it is just off top to bottom. I don't see any evidence of trimming. What am I missing?

A PSA 7 Lundgren (Chicago) sold in the REA auction last May for $2,643.

I think I'll call and ask tomorrow what's up, as I was a buyer up to the mid $2's and want to know if I'm going to get a second chance at it.

I know the stuff I was bidding on when higher then I expected. A wierd sale especially for this time of year and the economy.

That Lundgren is very tough in high grade. There are three 7's and one 8. It is a thin market, but if the timing is right on condition rarities in the registry chase, there is no telling what might happen. But of course I am just naive.

I don't think the integrity of SCP auctions was ever put into question. It was the validity of the bidders that I was questioning. Even with a registry fight, 600-1500% of value still seems a little high to not wait for it to come around again.

If a board member won Lot #10 - the Cameo Pepsin pins - I would be interested in obtaining the Nig Cuppy.

Ryan,

What's with the huge defensive position for SCP? I've looked over every post in this thread and can't find a single one that in any way hints that the Lundgren high bid has anything to do with SCP's integrity. I don't think an SCP promotion or speal is at all needed. The only two options ever explored were fake bidders (like 0 feedback bidders on eBay that ruin auctions for fun) or competing registry bidders. No one ever said anything about SCP running a scam. In fact, not only did no one say anything in regards to that, it wouldn't even make any sense to do so...

Oh, was Ryan being sarcastic? I've never even heard of David Kohler, so I have no idea what his rep is like. It may have just gone over my head....what's the skinny?

Here is the thread that gives in detail the issues Ryan had with SCP.

Just to be clear, every experience I've ever had buying and consigning with SCP has been perfect. Sorry to hear not everyone has had the same experience.

Ryan, I had forgotten about that horror show, what a disgrace. It's not a coincidence that the auction field is littered with principals with criminal records (or about to have criminal records).

Sometimes niche cards achieve extraordinary prices. For instance, the Esskay cards we've sold all went to high profile bidders with extensive bankrolls. No neferious bidding techniques, hidden reserves or anything else that would cast negative light on us was employed. While I don't doubt that there is fraud in the hobby, someone with a lot of coin could have just really wanted that Lundgren card. However, some of the other evidences brought to light are compelling, or at very least make for interesting reading :)

There are two forces in the hobby working at the same time: there are collectors who will spend incredible amounts of money for cards they want, and there is likewise rampant fraud. As a result, it is difficult to distinguish the real bid from the shilled bid.

I always take the skeptical POV, it much more rewardng to be delightfully surprised than disappointed.

I purchased lot 67 and was content with the price. I have purchased multiple times from SCP without any questions or problems. I cannot say the same for two other current auction houses who I have purchased from and consigned with. I experienced first hand the complete lack of ethics these people display. When I caught one of them in a tale their response was "they lied". That made me feel much better.

Would you mind sharing your specific experiences? It would help others in the future not fall victim to the same.
