I was hesitant to start yet another T206 thread given all the threads lately, but this auction got my attention as it showed up in one of my saved searches e-mail notices.

http://cgi.ebay.com/T206-JOE-DOYLE-N-Y-NATL-to-329-000_W0QQitemZ120507833317QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUS_Bas eball?hash=item1c0ed39be5

Paper loss where NAT'L should be. SC 350 back - right or wrong?

Other thoughts?

It looks to me that someone sent a Doyle in to PSA to be graded, got it graded, then somewhere along the line someone worked their way into the slab and swapped cards. I think that is somewhat more likely than PSA completely missing the paper loss, or rub. (somewhat... not definitely).

Someone should know how and be able to get that number off of the slip, and see what card PSA thinks it is... I'm thinking a normal Doyle.

This listing was very funny and quite entertaining to me. 99% sure that the lister made a mistake (or is trying to intentionally mislead) ... but there is always that 1% chance that someone decided to ruin a $250k card and turn it into a $250 card.

Hope that someone doesn't pay too much for this "error"

The one spot where it would have the Nat'l happens to have paper loss??I would think PSA would have put it on the flip:confused:.....smells funny to me.

J. Doyle (N.Y. Nat'l) is only known with the Piedmont 350 back, although PSA mistakenly graded one Polar Bear example that close inspection suggests is a fake. There is an approximately zero percent chance that the card at auction is (or ever was) a legitimate J. Doyle (N.Y. Nat'l) specimen.

Even his Larry Fritsch story is a little on the erratic side. :)

My question to him:

"What gives you the confidence to claim as boldly as you do that there was a NAT'L in that space at one point which was rubbed off?

A much, much, much more likely scenario is just simple paper loss .... is there something that you know would give you a different impression?"

His response:
"I am just pointing out the area of interest on my Joe Doyle PSA card. It looks like the previous owner might have erased something. I recently purchased the PSA card off ebay and it could sell for more.
Good Luck Bidding!
Mike V."

So what's with all the hype ?! Sounds like a WAY different story than his listing. Makes for good drama though.

I just read one persons question to the seller shown at the bottom of the auction. He completely failed to answer the question which would have taken all of one short sentence.

According to his past auction wins, he won it from 707 Sports

I thought that I would fish for some information, so I asked that question at the bottom. I followed it up with another question...Did he feel that this was one of the three or four rare Doyle error cards that had been graded by PSA?

His response:
Dear Ron:
Well, I show a close up view of the card and to me it looks like PSA over looked the area of interest. In the eyes of PSA it is not the error card but there is still a chance it could be. I am sure it will sell next Sunday.
Thank you,
Mike V.

It sounds to me like he is well aware of what he is selling, but hoping that the bidding gets out of control somewhere along the way. The $329,000 title is certainly misleading hype. I guess he feels that the close-up view somehow justifys the questionable description.

I think that Mike V. and the two gentlemen selling that "special wagner" should get together and start a T206 set.

I will never forget when one of these guys came on the board defending their "Wagner".....Can you guess which one(s)?

The guy in the middle is Burt Mustin...played Gus the Fireman on "Leave it to Beaver", among many other TV roles.

How did "Burt Mustin's" name end-up in a prewar baseball card discussion group(?)...........I'll never know, but this guy was a busy dude the last 20 years of his life. His face is probably as recognizable as a T206 Wagner. Old Burt's other TV roles...

Lovely Day...

Surprising to see only one appearance in the original Dragnet. I thought he was a staple on the show. Must of been wrong.

The Brady Bunch episode was when Bobby considered Jesse James his hero. My Brady had this guy meet Bobby since his Dad knew Jesse James. Bobby was very excited until he told him Jesse James shot his Dad in the back.

Leon, the above unions wish to express their Thanks.

The transformation is almost complete.

Not only is this forum becoming pre war ... pre Viet Nam War, but all it needs is a hint of a TV show, and and any vintage baseball topic will become a TV topic. :D
Why even a topic about black baseball during the 1880's could become a topic about say ..... SNL.

Leon, may I make a suggestion.
As a member of the Ameican Federation of Television and Radio Artist, and Screen Actors Guild, I've noticed a pretty strong representation of deeply devoted aficionados on this forum that follow the scripts of their favorite show better than any religious fanatic will follow the Bible.
During my years of working night time series, and Soap Operas in NYC, we would refer to them as, "The Great Unwashed."
They don't mean to hijack a baseball thread, it's a knee jerk reaction with them, but once they do, it's goodbye Abner Doublday. :D

Anyway, let me get to the point.
They're crying for a home of their own, a shelter, a warm place to talk about Seinfeldt, the Simpsons ... SNL.
Build them their Shangri-La, and they will come.
They can visit pre WW1 vintage baseball anytime they wish ... it's like having dual citizenship. :)

Just a thought.

If you look at the list painstakingly copied from IMDB, Mr. Mustin did appear several times on the more modern Dragnet (The one still available in re-runs and on hulu.com) then he did on the original Dragnet.

Yes, he was a staple on Dragnet, but the more modern version there of.

Amazing career; for he started acting when most actors are calling it a day.

I agree with you in theory about how every post should be card related only.

However; discussions sometimes are sloppy and the direction moves away from cards; and then usually returns.

One of my favorite authors, the late David Halberstam, would interweave "distractions" into his books and then use those "distractions" to return to the main subject.

So, let's see how we can compare Mr. Doyle to Mr. Mustin :)

This thread about this ebayer had pretty much run it's course. Just like so many auctions on ebay the guy is fishing for someone to think they have a gold mine, when they will end up with a mud pie.

So after it was pretty much over Scott L. made a reference to the two guys selling the fake "Wagner" that made it to an otherwise, seemingly reputable auction house, as well as the National news. Taking my cue I went with it, showed a picture of our 2 infamous, past board members and went in another direction too. I always liked Gus on Leave it to Beaver and remember him doing a few other things too. Gus was cool. I also had a picture of Sanjaya Malakar, who was a teeny bopper heart throb on one of the first American Idol shows. The kid couldn't sing very well (imo) but still kept making the cuts as the little girls kept voting him through. Then everyone else just took it from there. As far as making a section for talking about TV and movies, no thanks. There are probably 10000 other forums for that. As for having a bit of fun in the future, I hope we continue. best regards

As you all know (apparently except for Joe P.....), old Burt was the catcher and first baseman on the PMC (Pennsylvania Military College) 1902-1903 baseball team. I found this fuzzy picture of him on the internet. He was built like Connie Mack, who also dabbled as a catcher before finding his true calling.

From here, I'm sure someone else can get us closer to Mr. Doyle...

Lovely Day...

Lost track of this thread until now...yes Burt got into acting late in life, but he made a career out of that angular, strange looking face of his. Pretty funny.

When I was a kid, my family occasionally played Trivial Pursuit. One question was for the name of the fireman in Leave It to Beaver. It was for a pie piece, I drew a blank, and my dad was pretty disappointed. (It was a heated game.)

These days I can't hear the name Gus without thinking about "Gruff but lovable Gus" - a character from the NBC days of David Letterman.

Barry, are you implying, that you don't have an angular strange looking face??? Hopefully, that is not holding you back from making a career move...

Jeff, the term "The Great Unwashed" is derivative to early radio soap opera's.
It was not meant to be a derogatory term, but more so of the wide recognition of the vast fandom of radio soaps during the depression years.
Soaps were followed daily ... religiously.
Till this day, the term has stayed with us.
I worked 15 of the 19 years, on a TV soap called The Doctors on NBC at 30 Rock.
