Rob D. just started this thread on the Baseball Card side and I thought it was a great Idea for a thread. So let's see all of your favorite additions from 2000-2009.

I had a pretty good year but one piece clearly stands out for me...

Yeah, for all the many many ones youve shown Jimmy, that one is simply breathtaking, as is the vintage version of the Clemente that you have. This is a great thread, as so much great stuff comes on here.

For a poor fool like me, My Early 60s signed ball w Stengel, Traynor, Sisler, McKechnie, Musial, Snider, Spahn, etc and odd ones like Keane, etc..

Hey Jimmy,
Being that some think that the century and decade began in the year 2000 (although many disagree), why not expand the thread to memorabilia pickup of the decade as well? I wonder for how many it would be the same item?

For me the pickup of the year is easy.
It is this because of the item and the way it was obtained.
It came via Hawaii. Thanks very much David.

2009 was an outstanding year for The Dorskind Collection.

We acquired 20 important pieces including three ultra rare post cards, three advertising signs, an ultra rare George Miller wrapper and plethora of Negro League and Federal League Memorabilia

Whilst it is difficult to choose a favorite, our two recent acquisitions from The Lealand's Auction are our first and second choices.

God Bless America and Happy Holidays

In the spirit of the Holiday Season, this was a wonderful year for collecting and for making some friends via this forum. 2009 was great for buying, selling, and trading alike. I acquired some amazing new pieces, sold some things I never thought I'd part with, and made some great trades along the way.

But most importantly, I got to know and make friends with some people within the hobby that would not have happened without the help of this site.

I don't have a favorite piece, but here's a "top 5"... It's a Cubs Pennant from the days when they were a feared opponent. There's no question that the ferocious/realistic early Bear mascot was better karma than the cute/cuddly Cubbie mascots of the past 60 years. Perhaps that's the reason for their demise!

found this amazing piece at an antique show in 2002 or 2003 while digging thru a box of advertising items.....price was $20.00.

My favorite acquisition has to be the original illustrations by Charles Copeland for Frank Hart's 1938 novel, The Speed Boy. The book itself is interesting as it deals with baseball in the deadball era, and I'm not sure how popular that was in 1938, given Babe Ruth's rise to fame.

Here are some of the illustrations, as well as the book itself

My favorite pickup of the decade was an 1896 baseball bat handmade and inscribed in Maine State Prison by a prisoner serving a life sentence. It had the original prison decal stating it was made in the prison and came with the original, but very tattered, leather carrying case. The bat itself was Near Mint plus, apparently unused. The bat was a working adult size but with a unique design, including rings cut into the barrel mimicking a Spaulding painted ring bat. You can see a couple of the rings in the left of the picture. After I bought it from a reliable source, I sent pictures of it, including a closeup of the decal, to the prison museum (it's now a state historical site, the original prison was largely destroyed by fire in the early 1900s). The curator said it was genuine and that the prison had a prisoner woodworking shop and baseball league.

By far my best pick-up in the last decade... (I have shown it many times)

The first picture is a diagram of a baseball field with four names written on the bottom corner. The second picture is the "Rules and Regulations of the New Marlboro Match Base Ball Co." Notice the same four names on the bottom corner. The third picture is a signature of whom I am certain is responsible for drawing the diagram and the rules. The fancy signature "William Lewis Camp" is in an autograph album from the South Berkshire Institute dated 1863. The signatures of all four of the names written above are in this album which ties the whole lot to the South Berkshire Institute. The fourth picture is of the Institute located in New Marlboro, Mass.

One of my favorite pieces this decade mainly because it took so darn long to complete. I first started with just the main A's starters from 72-74, then realized I'd be missing out on some players I wanted, so changed the scope to every player from 72-74 but realized that Charlie Finley made a heck of a lot of trades. Decided on all players from 71-75 that were on the playoff and WS rosters...still a large project, and who knew that Vern Hoscheit would be so darn hard to find!

Wow. That Joe Jackson BG is amazing! Such a great story. I only picked up one piece of memorabilia this year and it was one of the same Fatima tins as posted above. My grandma let me look through her antiques and when I found the Fatima tin I was amazed. I guess that I kind of made a hobby find, but I wish that I would of found a Boston Garter Jackson instead. I'm not really one for collecting memorabilia, as I'll usually buy whatever I need photo-wise, scan it, and then get it back on eBay or turn it to some friends for whatever I paid. I figure that I have no business having original things in my hands, as I only use them for work, and to later file them away. So, with that in mind, I don't really have anything that would knock anyone's socks off.

But, this particular piece does have special meaning to me:

http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b158/GKreindler/Hubbell-2.jpg

It's amazing that I only 'picked it up' in August of this year at the National. The photo was actually a gift from a great friend who knew of my love for Hubbell. He figured the image would make an amazing painting, and he couldn't leave it to languish in a seller's binder without me seeing it. Damn was he right. The fact that he went out of his way to purchase this gift, let alone just think of me, goes beyond words. I'm eternally grateful for his friendship, and I'm sure I always will be.

Graig

PS: And for those of you who care, the shot is from before the fourth game of the 1937 World Series, the only contest Hubbell and the Giants would win against the Bombers that year.

Thanks Mike and Jimmy...

There's a good news/bad news scenario with early pennants. Bad news is that most of the great/oversized ones are mired in advanced collections (and aren't going anywhere for some time). There's been a sharp drop-off in recent years, of quality pennants being available. Where there used to be a dozen or so available in every Lelands, Mastro or Hunts Catalog, now there might be 1 or 2.

The good news is that when they do come available, prices are currently down (due to the crappy ecomomy). So it's an ideal time to pounce, if you see one you like that comes available. When you search ebay with the word "pennant" you'll see 98% crap (new mass produced stuff).

So I always check off the search by "highest price first" criteria. I also used to do well searching by the word "penant". Lots of people mis-spell it, and some really good ones used to fall under the radar. Some people call them flags or banners as well, so it sometimes helps to search those words.

Thanks Graig... Can you please provide a few paragraphs to describe what you feel when you look at it?

Just kidding... your response to the inquiry about the other Conlon of Matty (that you painted) was so eloquent, I wanted to hear it again. That other image is much nicer... Conlon even noted on the back of this one that Matty is looking old and weathered!

You shouldn't tempt me, I love talking about this stuff. Especially when people want to listen!

But seriously, the other shot of him probably only seems nicer because there's much more of a range in the value scale. And of course, having the whole torso doesn't either. If this one had his upper body, it would be just as sweet. I feel like this is the kind of portrait shot I would make into a 9"x12" or something.

An interestingly enough, the image dates from 1912, only a year after the other one was shot. I guess he seemed much older for Conlon to write that...

A couple of items from my minor league official game ball collection I'm especially proud of:

Probably the pride of my collection, a 1939 Pacific Coast League ball.

http://img532.imageshack.us/img532/7614/img3023a.th.jpg (http://img532.imageshack.us/i/img3023a.jpg/)

And one with a story, a 1962 Three-I League ball, Ken Blackman, President:
http://img64.imageshack.us/img64/6278/blackman3ileagueball.th.jpg (http://img64.imageshack.us/i/blackman3ileagueball.jpg/)

Except Ken Blackman was never president of the Three-I League. Blackman had signed on as president after the 1961 season, but the league folded. I don't know how many of these balls even exist.

And one more, a Warren Giles National League ball with Western International League stamped on the side. Robert B. Abel was president of the WIL from 1946-1952, and Giles started his tenure in 1951, so this is either a '51 or '52 vintage. (I need a better picture, the stamping is somewhat faded but the glare in the photo makes it appear worse than it is.)

Nice memory.... What are the odds? I am certain that the containers you photographed were for Inverted Mantles, some were short and fat and some were long and skinny. It is amazing to me how these mantle companies could apparently cater to individual sectors of business. I would imagine these things are fairly rare. If you think about it, why would anyone save a mantle container. You open it up take out the mantle and chunk the box in the trash.... I do see several on ebay, but they are newer and display the company logo without any great graphics.

Thanks again Carlton,
