View Full Version : What was your favorite pickup in '09?

Seems like a good time for a year-in-review thread.

I was extremely fortunate to add a lot of nice cards to my collection during the past 11-plus months. I think this one is my favorite not only because of the card itself but because I bought it in person at the National. No auction. No staying up until 3 a.m. to see if a bid holds up. No worrying about shilling and the like. No "great guys." There's something to be said about holding a card (or slab, in this case) in your hand, looking the seller in the eye and attempting to reach a deal.

Here's hoping '09 was good to you.

Timely post, Rob.

I also feel very fortunate to have added a number of nice cards to my collection over the past year, not least of which is the Birmingham for which remain in your debt. My favorite of the year, though, is the Donlin from REA.

While I haven't been to a show in many years, I vividly remember the feeling you just described and plan to get back to the National in '10.

I have acquired quite a few vintage BB related items that I could post here. But, my favorite is this unopened
American Beauty pack, since I have been searching for one for several years. I opened it to find the original 10
cigarettes in it.....but, no card.

Rob,
Your story about buying a card from a dealer, at a table, at the National (or any other show) almost made change my mind about my favorite '09 pickup...almost. This REA pickup makes everything else in my collection seem expendable.

Trae put me in contact with someone who had acquired a large group of t206s, among them were 29 with McCormick's stamp. They had contacted Trae through his website to see if he knew anything about them, he contacted me, and they ended up in Omaha. And the board ended up with another contributing member.

I like larger sized items like Police Gazette supplements, La Presse rotos, Blum's Bulletins, etc. I think my favorite pick up this past year may be this page from the NY Times in 1910. If anybody has the American League, I'm interested in buying it.

I have had a great time trying to put this set together this year. I am putting a low grade set together with the intent to upgrade later. I still need 8 more to complete. Planned on having set completed but 2 of my kids (their adults but kids to me) lost there jobs here in Southern Michigan due to the car industry cutback so I had to put this on hold to help them out. I bought an awful lot of nice cards this past year and made inroads in to that E94 master set (thanks Jon C. for the olive Cicotte today) but beyond a doubt this was my best pick-up. Not a single one available in the whole darn State, I had to drive to Poteau, Oklahoma to a WalMart and found the last one. They are the hottest item for kids this year and are selling for two and three times their price on ebay and being snatched up. My granddaughter will be thrilled when Santa brings this Christmas Eve :D

Can I ask what scanner you use? I need a CCD scanner.

It was the cheapest scanner I could find at CompUSA about 6 years ago.
It is a Canon (CanoScan3000 I think) and it cost $50.

More important than the scanner is the free Picassa software from Google
that I use to get the colors to look realistic. If you click on the link right below the
scans I post, you can see how Picassa houses my collection and, more than likely, download the software yourself.

Thanks very much for the info. I have been scouring the message boards for the best scanner, and the CanoScans are always talked about the most. Unfortunately I couldn't find any new for the right price, so I went with a HP Scanjet G3110. It's CCD with cathode tube (able to scan BGS, PSA and refractors) and is only $45 new on eBay. It seems to be a good one. I've seen the scans it makes and am impressed. I hope they turn out as good as yours. That scan and card are amazing.

All of you have awsome cards! I really take pride in looking at other members pride and joy. It's like walking in a candy store as a 3 year old...

I will post some of mine soon. I don't have the older stuff like many of you all, but I have done okay for myself and budget.

I especially enjoyed obtaining the Alcott - Mansfields card in a trade. It was the last significant "common" team I needed.

I am very proud of this pickup, as it is huge for my Wheat collection. There are only 9 total in the SGC population report and only 3 of those are graded higher, all at 40. Thanks for looking!

Thanks Phil. A good tackhole always gives a piece a certain character as well as an automatic "10."

I have had some nice pick ups for 2009-I finally got the Jack Dunn American Beauty to finish my Baltimore AB set, got the Smith t213-2 to finish the Baltimore players in t213( still need an upgrade on the Jack Dunn t213).
I picked up 2 black Lenox and a few other rare backs

I also picked up some really nice southern league cards from several different sets-thanks to some great 54 members and ebay

but I guess my best
pick up is this one-thanks Rob

Congrats to all!

I have different favorites for different reasons. 2009 was a great year for my Detroit collection so I'm sharing my favorite OJ and Tomlinson together with a Police Gazette type card.

First, thanks Rob D, for starting what seems to be a great thread. Sincerely.

Next, thanks to everyone who's posted...

So far, this is my favorite pickup of 2009... courtesy of a low profile collector
who got this and contacted me. Thank you, sir. It came from the SkyDash stash. A
second favorite arrived today, Jeff Tesreau's T210... thank you kind board member.

J F Whitaker, the hard hitting outfielder for the Richmond Pioneers of
the Blue Grass League, an Old Mill red border series 6 T210. With this
card, I lack one more to complete series 6... maybe my favorite pickup
in 2010 will be Angermeier fielding....

This card measures 5-1/8" by 3" and pictures the Electric Display at Willow Grove (PA) Park. On the back is an announcement for a Third Annual Picnic under auspices of Kinsports Employees with music by Sousa's band. In smaller lettering there is mention of "Philadelphia and Chicago (National League) at 15th and Huntingdon Streets". The date is August 21, 1915.

What interested me about the card initially was the mention of Willow Grove: a longtime home of one of our hobby's best shows. After a bit more research, I discovered that the Phillies had a doubleheader that day and won both ends: 7-5, behind the great Grover Cleveland Alexander in the opener, and Al Demaree over Karl Adams, 3-2, in the second. Furthermore, the Phillies would go on to win the National League pennant that year.

Minutes ago, as I was trying to track down this information for posting, I discovered another important fact regarding the date August 21, 1915 which I did not know at time of purchase. That was the date that the Chicago White Sox acquired outfielder Shoeless Joe Jackson for outfielders Larry Chappell and Robert Roth, pitcher Ed Klepfer and something over $31,000 in cash!

This find came courtesy of a spur of the moment eBay search for "Willow Grove."
