Folk;
At the risk of trying your patience even more, will someone please point me to the thread in which T206 Sweet Cap overstrikes were discussed?

It looks to me like there were at least two kinds -- the 150 overprint "black out" is a red bar. The new information appears above the bar, under the word "subjects."

In the 350-460 series, the black out is a kind of red braid, the new information appears below and outside of the box.

I also remember reading about why these were done. I can't find anything in Scot Reader (it may be there, but I can't find it).

Can anyone help? Thanks in advance.

Hi Bob

The Sweet Caporal 150, Factory 649 (overprint) resulted when ATC spread out their cigarette production to their Rochester (NY)
plant (Factory 649). American Litho. (ALC) selected 35 subjects from their printed stock of Sweet Caporal 150, Factory 30 series
and modified these cards by overprinting the Factory 30 line with a solid red bar. And, added "Factory 649, 1st Dist. N.Y.". Then,
these cards were shipped to Rochester to be inserted into their packs.

The Sweet Caporal 350-460, Factory 42 (overprint) resulted when ATC transferred their cigarette production to the Durham (NC)
plant (Factory 42) in early 1911. ALC had already printed Sweet Caporal 460, Factory 30 (NY) cards for their 350/460 series (55
subjects) when this transfer to Durham occurred. These Sweet Cap 460, Factory 30 cards were NEVER inserted into packs at the
NY plant. Instead, ALC overprinted the Factory 30 line with a red braid, and added "Factory #42, 4th Dist. N.C." to these cards.
Then, these cards were shipped to Durham to be inserted into their packs.

There are a possible 109 cards in this Sweet Cap 460, Factory 42 overstrike group.....which also includes the 48 cards from the
460-only series and the 6 super-prints. I have been collecting this T206 sub-set; and, so far I can confirm 95 cards.

Best regards,

for your immediate reply. My holdings in this subset include Griffith Portrait, Bender Throwing No Trees, Elberfeld Fielding, "Happy" Smith and Hooks Wiltse with cap.

Again, thanks for the help. Is this written down anywhere else (other than your Bell labs trained cranium)?

Responding to your......
"Is this written down anywhere else (other than your Bell labs trained cranium)?"

"Trained", no......but perhaps, after 29 years at Bell Labs, my mind is a "transistor" :)

Anyhow, I posted a thread on this forum regarding the Sweet Caporal 150/649 ovpt. cards a couple of years ago,
when I completed this sub-set.

And,regarding the Sweet Caporal 460/42 ovpt. cards..........

reveals "Factory 30 N.Y."

I posted a thread on this Sweet Cap Overprint some time ago. Otherwise, I'm not sure where you can find more
info on these two Sweet Caporal overstrike series.

Furthermore, I show the Johnson proof card as an example that the 55 cards of the 350/460 series were indeed
printed with the "Factory 30 N.Y." back....although the completed cards were never issued (inserted into cigar-
ette packs produced in the New York plant).

Incidently, your Sweet Caporal 460/42 overprint Bender (no trees) is a new one....that was previously unknown.
