Just picked up this Hal Chase twice signed postcard. Originally inscribed to his mother in 1917, the card depicts Chase as a Cincinnati Red; later it was used again and signed for Peggy Danahy and her father apparently in 1919 when Chase was on the Giants. Does anyone recognize this postcard?

Jeff - congrats! Wonderful piece and couldn't have a batter home then in your Chase collection.

Great pick up Jeff...Hal seemed to have a very unsteady hand, don't you think?

The two sets of writing look different to me -- compare each "Chase"?

Very nice. Thanks for posting that. Reckon that "C" is for Chicago, when he was with the White Sox? A spring training shot?

Chase's handwriting got shakier as he got older (and drank more I suppose). Compare to a later signature:

No, that was when he was with the Reds.

That still looks like the same writing. The mother's name looks different entirely to my unexpert eye, the loop on the C, the way the h is formed, etc.

It's so sad to see what alcoholism did to Chase and his handwriting. It ruined so many great players in the day including Prince Hal, Rube Waddell and countless others :(

that was a good ebay p/u. I nearly bid on it myself and believe it or not it took two times on ebay before it sold!
