To deal with ebay's new system, I have saved a search where I check every box from 1870 through 1947. Today, hundreds of cards from 1948-80 popped up. I began wondering why. I think I've figured it out. Anytime a seller actually lists the year for an ungraded card from the "post-war" era, the phrase "post-war 1942-1980" is included in the listing automatically. Ebay's ingenious search system picks up all of these "1942s" when I put a check mark in 1942. As a result, there are nearly 1,000 1942 cards listed, when there should be approximately zero.

I've worked around this by unchecking the 1942 box, but again this is utter stupidity. It also illustrates how few people are actually checking the year boxes when they list their cards for sale. There are a lot more than 1,000 cards from 1942-80 listed. But these aren't being shoveled into the "1942" box because the sellers did not check the "year" box and therefore were not automatically assigned the "1942-80" era. If the year is included in the title, I think it should still show up in the appropriate year-by-year search, but I'm not 100% sure of that.
