I recently came into many cards which I assume are T 206. How can I tell the difference between similar sets?

bikeman - welcome to the forum. Here is a great link with samples of cards from each tobacco issue:
http://www.oldcardboard.com/cardSetList.asp?GroupID=2

T204 are square with an ornate gold border.
T205 are rectangular (1-7/16" x 2-5/8") with a gold border.
T206 are the same size as T205s but with a white border.
See here for visual identification of tobacco cards:

We'd also love to see scans of whatever you found.

Post a scan or photo (even a cell phone photo) of some of what you have here and you'll likely find out in a very short amount of time!

T204's are ramlys and are larger than both the T206 and T205 and have a very nice gold pattern to them. The T206 has an all white border with black lettering and a solid black line around the pic. The T205 has a gold border that will shimmer in the light like a gold crayon. Post some pics when you can.

Thanks for the info. I think you would be disappointed in the scans. I do have a good many cards, but I have had them to a local card store and they are mostly commons, a few Hall of Famers and All Stars. Most are G-VG with a few Exc and 25 or so poor. I have about 250 different 206 and I have only recently catalogued them and I am now adding to them on E Bay. I do have some 205's that are not catalogued and I have no idea what I have even. I used to collect cigarette packs and i would buy cards during the search for packs. I lost the pack collection in a fire but not the cards and they have sat in a box in a closet for 25 years. You will probably be sick to hear I paid $1 or $2 for them. I also have hundreds of non sports that I often bought for even less.

If you are still listing these on ebay you might give a little more thought to how they are described in the titles. I think you need to make very sure you put T206 in there.....as without the categories you might not get a whole lot more than you paid for them .

I would guess you will still get more than they sold for back in 1963 though :D

Go to library and get a good catalog for PreWar cards.

Are all of your cards Tobacco cards? Are any Candy?

You may have a T212-1, T212-2, T212-3, T213-1, T213-2, T213-3, T214, T215-1, T215-2, etc. card mixed in with the cards you think are common T206's (all these sets have similar fronts, similar to a T206).

Some of the rarer ones like T214, T215 will easily sell for 10-20X+ more.
