View Full Version : Thinking about starting another ridiculous e107 project...someone talk me out of it

Been giving some thought to only going after the commons. Was curious if anyone who'd been keeping up with this set, knew what the going rate was for commons in rough/beater condition. I'm not even talking about nice cards in a 10 holder...just the really lowgrade stuff. If they're still going for hundreds, approaching a grand...I'll probably stay away. Only really considering this because I've got quite a bit to put up in trade and I'm hoping the market is down on them a bit. Kinda ugly cards to be spending hundreds on apiece :)

Thanks for the input guys,
Brian

I'll talk you out of it Brian...don't do it!:)

If you do give it a shot look at it as trying to accumulate as many as you possibly can. You know going in you won't finish it, so shoot for getting 25 or 50, or some feasible number. Then you at least have a goal to shoot for.

I don't think real beaters (commons) will come close to 1k each, unless it's a really rare one. I would have to guess they would go for 200-400.....that's just a wild guess based on decent ones sold lately....Good luck if you go for it!!

Leon, I would say closer to 400 than 200 in your range, and maybe a bit more, though you're right it won't be a $1000 unless they're in much better shape. Obviously the HOFers cost a mint in whatever shape. There are quite a few in real beater condition from a single find, if I'm not mistaken, and they are all recognizable by a hole in the top and the same sort of moldy markings all over (I also think most have some pencil writing on them; they are all obviously recognized).
I bought two of them from an REA auction, and it cost a touch over $900 with the juice. If you're looking for beaters, you will find a bunch in this condition from the same find. I would say that they usually run about $350-550 if they're graded; I doubt you could get one for as low as $200 unless its raw and with significant back damage, just my 2 cents.

But it's a great set both in terms of history and appearance. I say go for it, why not! Even when you eventually give up, you'll be left with some great cards that are easily resold, as it seems to retain its popularity.

Hi, Brian.

I am also an entusiast of the set, but am putting together the HOFer set instead of the commons. With the low end commons, I have found that it really depends on their appearance. If you truly don't care at all what they look like, then you may be able to get some at what would have been considered "steal" prices from a couple of years ago. Has the market softened on them from their peak? Yes, but they are still quite desireable and quite rare, so that, in itself has helped their value. I agree with the sentiment that true beater commons won't be $1K (unless they are exceptionally rare). Good luck and let me know if you run across any HOFers!

Sounds like a very cool project idea, a large group of low grade commons would make for a great collection.

I'd agree with Leon on $200-400 for true beaters.

When I was talking 200-400 my guess, on the lower end, my guess was based on cards that look much worse than the one above with some paper gone. I am talking about really well loved cards, totally creased up with mold and pieces missing to boot. A nice poor conditioned card could look like a vg on the front with a spec of paper loss on the back (even on a blank back for crying out loud!!). And I would think that PR card would sell for closer to a gd+ card..The lower the grade the more the relativity. It could be a neat project.....

Thanks for the replies so far. I'm fine with absolute beaters so that's the sort of card I was asking about. $200-400 sounds like it might work for me just as long as I can still see the face of the player on the card, I'd probably be ok with it.

Barry, a good point....maybe I could start off with a particular team or something. Well, actually, I'd probably better just take whatever's available....beggers can't be choosers.

Brian, I remember speaking to you previously about the HOFers. I used to collect those actually and it wasn't long before I had all my funds tied up in about 8-10 cards. Not much fun there so I'll steer clear of you on the HOFers...

Thanks guys!
Brian

have always liked this set. the history, scarcity, and awesome black and white look has always done it for me. Because of cost have only been able to gather 8 fairly decent commons. Would enjoy seeing someone put together a common set. good luck !

Is the Wagner a common?

I hope so.

The E107 is such an iconic set, and there will always be interest for commons as well as Hall of Famers. Commons in particular are much more affordable than in the past so now might be a good time to pick some up. Good luck with your new endeavor, Brian.

Brian,
it looks like it is the best of times to go for some low grade favorites and just see what happens.
and the trading will be loads of fun as part of the process.

all the best!!!
