Henry D Ramsey Information?

Does anyone have any information on a 19th century player named Henry D. Ramsey? He later was a minor league manager for about 16 years and that information is available in the SABR database (http://www.baseball-reference.com/bullpen/Henry_Ramsey), but I can't find any player records for him. In the book "Chasing Moonlight" they mention that "...Henry D. Ramsey, a long-time minor league player and manager..."

In addition to his playing records, if anyone has any info about DOB/DOD or where he lived post-baseball that would be appreciated.

Nobody has any additional information on him? He was the first president of the Hudson River League if that helps...

What kind of search turned up that article? I went several pages deep with Google and didn't see it.

Hi Matt,

Had a full reply drafted and Firefox crashed..argh. It took a while, but found reference to him going by Hank in an old Sporting Life article (if I recall) - I had wondered if he might, but was too engrossed in reading to do the search.

I had written more, but ... anyway references were drying up around 1915 - I think his mgr career was done about then (http://preview.tinyurl.com/nfgsl4)) and ultimately the search for "Hank Ramsey" manager 1915 (then 1916 1917) turned up that article - that last search only had 17 hits.

The Honus reference was very cool. There also may be a reference to his playing days, as there are games stats from an A-J-G team (per the obit article) playing Utica in Sporting Life (I don't recall the year/issue) - I think Ramsey was a pitcher.

Getting to spend the morning going through some old Sporting Life and Baseball Mag issues, well that was just gravy. :)

"Word was received In this city today
of the burial in Paterson. N. J., yesterday
of Henry "Hank" Ramsey, a former
baseball manager. Identified for many
seasons with the New York State Base-
Ball League. Ramsey died in a sanitarium
at Morris Plains, N. J., last week.
He was born In Paterson Sept. 13, 1869.

Ramsey entered base-ball upward of
21 years ago, managing the Pateraon
club;—Later he helped organize the
Hudson River League, where he managed
tho Newburg and Kingston clubs.
He then turned his attention to the New
York State circuit, playing a -very important,
part in the formation of the
League which to-day stands as the oldest
minor league in the country. In the
???? wheel Ramsey managed at Altoona,
Utica. Elmira, Scranton and Troy,
and invariably he had his team- at the
top fighting tooth and nail for the honors."

Matt- I did a search of the New York Times archives for Ramsey figuring since he managed around New York state that his obituary might have been in the paper. Tried "Henry D.", "Hank", "H.D." etc, no dice. Found numerous references to his managing career including a baseball tour he led to Cuba in 1904 but nothing from his playing days. Any pre-1900 search hit on "Ramsey baseball" was likely pitcher Toad Ramsey whose life, as an interesting sidebar (to me any way), was reputed to have been "ruined by debauchery". That's a good a way to go as any, I suppose. Glad Mike was able to deliver the goods.

Thanks David - I'm biginning to think the quote from the book above "Chasing Moonlight" was mistaken when they said he was a former player. None of the obits mention him playing and the last one I posted seemed explicit that his first baseball encounter was as a manager.

Researching something entirely different, I found that Hank Ramsey was hired as the Manager of the Wellsville NY Interstate League in 1916. I was trying to find out who he was when I found this post. There is very little information on him in our 1916 newspapers, a few articles saying that he hired a few players for the team...you can search the Wellsville NY newspapers thru the David A Howe Library, newspapers are searchable on line.
