I only have a handful of these great ballplayers and it's mostly of the Beast, but I would love to see what the board has to offer. So, pull out your Collins, Plank, Waddell, Baker, Joost, Bender, Meyers, Barry, McInnis, Grove, Cochrane, Foxx, Dykes, Simmons and so on. You get the gist... If they played for Mack, let's see them! And of course Mack himself.

Original vintage TYPE I photograph by George Burke. The heart & soul of back to back World Champs.

I would love to, but everything I have on Rube is off-limits to public posting. There aren't too many genuine examples out there, that's for sure. Even the example in a well-known HOF autograph guide published in the early 1990's isn't authentic.

Sorry I can't help out with Waddell, but here's a copy of the only full-name version of Eddie Plank's signature that I've ever encountered. Notice how much less flamboyant this example is as compared to other versions.

Thanks. The Oldring and Coombs are interesting. They are actually colored pencil drawings that are dated to 1911. I bought them at the first National I went to in 2001. I passed on a Mack and Baker which I wish I would not of now. On the Collins and Baker the piece gave me something to do with my T3s that had a corner chipped off. (I know the Baker is actually Barry, details...).

As a collector of Eddie Plank, who was born, scouted, lived & died locally in Gettysburg PA.
For my birthday (yesterday) my wife took me today to a new resturant in Gettysburg
commemorating Eddie Plank, called "Gettysburg Eddies"
Very cool place w/ a ton of photos of Eddies (no cards) Ironically it is Eddie Plank's birthday today.
No one at the resturant knew that.

Oldtix - I sent you an email about the picture that you posted.

I don't get to post much on this board, but here is my contribution. A 1932 photo of Rube Walberg & Chief Bender.

The paper caption reads - "They still have that old control. On the left is Rube Walberg, southpaw of the Mackmen, who yesterday broke 46 clays out of 50 in a shoot for baseball stars at Bustleton. At the side of the Nordic southpaw is Chief Bender, once a great money pitcher for the Athletics, who finished just one "bird" behind the paleface."

Another aspect about this photo. At one point it appears as though someone cut the photo into two pieces, then put it back together for the newspaper photo. The cut line is to the right of Rube's head and goes all the way down his left arm, around Bender's gun barrel and follows Rube's leg & shoe to the bottom of the photo. I don't know much about these types of photos, but I found this kind of interesting.

The White Elephant Statue is accompanied by an exceedingly rare original invitation to the event, addressed to a Mr. Malcolm McLean. The invitation is printed on thick cardboard stock, with a gorgeous White Elephant Gold Seal embossed at the top...

Thanks, Mark!! That was one of my oldest pieces on the site, so it makes me happy that people dig it.

I tell ya, he's a lot of fun to paint - he's got such a great look to him. At some point, I'll have to make an image of him hitting the homer off of Lefty Gomez at Yankee Stadium, the one that supposedly landed in the left field upper deck and broke a seat back. It's generally thought that he did so in 1937, though I have yet to research it.

I think Lefty's quote about it was, "I don't know how far it went, but it took someone 45 minutes to go up there and retrieve the ball". Or something to that effect.

Some great stuff here! I've always been impressed with Philadelphia Athletics collectors, who rank up there with Brooklyn Dodgers collectors in their passion and knowledge of the subject. Here's the coolest Philly A's piece that we've handled here at Heritage (in my opinion):

First is the 1910 Championship trophy awarded to Topsy Hartsel. Second is a 1913 celebratory dinner program signed on the back cover by the whole team, including the ultra-tough Eddie Plank. Here are the links:

My closest connection to Connie Mack & his Phil. A's--My cousin Moritz Herman ("Dutch" or "Morts") Flohr was signed off the Duke Unv. campus by Mr Mack in 1934 to pitch for the MackMen.

"Morts' had no known baseball cards from his 1 season in the big leagues, but I have 2 known PC's signed by him.

I also have 2 index cards he signed for me in the late '80's, the last time I saw him before he died in 1994.

Here's one of my best pickups for 2009. It is the prototype for the "Mr. Baseball" Statue from the renowned/deceased artist, Harry Rosin. The "finished product" sits outside Citizens Bank Park, and was moved there from the old Veterans Stadium (and Connie Mack Stadium prior to that). See Internet blurbs below...

This is considered Rosin's greatest work, and this smaller prototype Statue is pretty captivating. I was lucky to get (from ebay of all places) and think a lot of other collectors must have simply missed it...

This Philly pennant is part of an American League set...probably c. 1950? Pennants measure about 11 1/2" long (excluding streamers)...

Jimmy:
LOVE the Coffee Cup! I was looking at that one for some time as well.

Rick:
Very neat Pennant set. Definitely early '50s vintage... great pickups!

44 long vertical pennant with applied lettering and elephant mascot along with all three blue tassels. Has a few tiny moth holes otherwise very clean. I'm told these pennants were believed to have been given to the players after their World Series triumph in 1910.

Wow! That is absolutely spectacular Jack. Fantastic pick-up.

I just can't get over how many incredible pennants I've seen posted on this board. Makes for wonderful viewing.

Jack-

I agree with Jimmy... that's a holy grail piece! Just a beautiful, majestic and historic pennant. Can you share how you acquired it? I believe Mastro had one about a decade ago, and that's the only one I've ever seen. It was even accompanied by a photo of an early automobile with people aboard, celebrating the A's Win, with this identical pennant draped for all to see (if I'm remembering correctly).

Great post!

It is one of my favoite pieces. I got it at Hunt's auction about 7 or 8 years ago. I'd love to see that picture.

Here you go, Jack....

An unreal companion piece to your magnificent pennant. I found it in the Halper Catalogue (Lot 1838).

Not only is your style of pennant pictured in this photo, but Connie Mack and Eddie Plank are in the Car (among others...) Another intriguing aspect of this photo is the Oakland Pennant also visible in the photo. A look into the future, perhaps??

I don't have my Halper catalogue handy at the moment for a higher res look - but it looks like the somewhat rotated out of line H in Jack's pennant is very simlar to the one in the old photo.

Jimmy - That A's coffee mug was a real nice pickup. I was watching it and hoped a collector would recognize its rarity and value. Great odd ball souvenir. Heck, I would have to resist the urge to drink an occasional cup of coffee out of it. This metal liscense plate is from the same era.

Mark:

That's a great catch on the "H" being tilted to the same side, and differing in relation to the other vertical letters. Since these letters were embroidered on (and not screened/painted) this would certainly increase the chances of it being the same pennant. If the graphics were screened instead, the letter H would be like that on all of them....

Pretty chilling to think it could conceivably be the same one pictured, nearly 100 years later. Of course the year on the Pennant pre-dates the photo (dated 1913), but it's very possible that the pennant was simply retained for a couple of years. That could also explain why the 1910 year portion of the pennant is folded under, and out of view inside the car

That's a heckuva first post.... welcome!

That Eddie Collins signed Cover is a killer piece. Perfect bold example... I love his autograph. Great HOF collection as well... the Rabbit Maranville Signed Playball Card is another beauty that really caught my eye. And the McKechnie Cover too... Great stuff!

Mighty Bombjack,
That is one heck of a first post!:D
Great sigs. You don't see a lot of Collahan signed cards, relative to oother issues. I love the cleaness of the Baker and Bender.
The Collins is a beaut. He definitely needs to be in any of the "nicest looking autograph" discussions.
Thanks for posting and welcome to the board. It is a nice place.

Mighty bombjack,
Just took a look at your photobucket site.
Very nice collection you got there.
I really like the Stearnes, Vance, and Connolly.
The Evers is a spectacular example. Sooo clean and neat.
I do love the Faber card though. His sig isn't that hard, but it's a great pic on the card.
Also, if you ever want to trade or sell the Rice postcard LMK. It is one I need for my set. You can use the link in my sig to the the rest of them.

The Evers is one of my favorites. It is in his book "Baseball in the Big Leagues"

I agree with Mark's sentiments - welcome to the board, and man, that Collins signature is amazing. I feel like so many players of that era had a great look to their autographs, but I think Collins had the most graceful one I've ever seen!
