I have a set of these. There are 3 Carew, Garvey and Jackson. The coins are pretty tarnished, so not sure if they were originally the "silver" or "bronze" color. I also have an extra Jackson, which is "gold" colored. It, unlike the other 3, has a hole in the top through the O in Topps. The SCD catalog notes that some have such holes. Does anyone, like David or Bob L, have any idea why some have holes ? For a chain maybe ? I have one of the 1957 Lucky Penny send away tokens, which you got by sending in the insert card, and the penny is in a metal circle with a hole with a small chain through it. Any thought the 1980 coins were going to be a send away for it type item ?

That's as reasonable a theory as any. I never heard of these coins until about 2004, and never had any information about them other than the fact of their existence.

Well, the hole in one surfaces! Actually, I just did a blog on these (which links to a prior entry with more info) and was hoping for additional scans, etc. These are mysterious little items, aren't they? Anyway, you can see what I have, which isn't much!

The hole lends itself to a "charm" theory of sorts but who knows?

How much do those things sell for? Or do they never come up for sale?

My records show that I paid $811 for the Carew.

I paid about $ 4,000 for the 4 I have, and that was about 4 years ago. I have only seen them on ebay twice. Bob always gets better deals than I do :(
