Here's another favorite. Original Charles Conlon Photo, with image used to later make his Playball Card (guessing 1940?)

Conlon's handwriting on the reverse interestingly notes that Matty's face is showing aging and "crows feet" from his years under the "Burning Sun on the Pitching Slab"...

circa 1912 original vintage TYPE I photograph by the famed photographer Paul Thompson. Obtained directly from the Stanley Weston Family.

Strikingly similar pose to his 1914 Cracker Jack card (NOTE: The Card is NOT mine and most likely never will be).

I have examined that card over and over (even under magnification) and can't clearly see why it graded VG. It looks minimally NM-MT, but apparently there must be some microscopic wrinkle that I just don't see.

Although I only joined the board just over a month ago, I have followed it for a few years now and I must say that David's post is the single greatest display that I've seen... period. Wow ! Talk about jaw-dropping. Well done David. That is the reason I start these kind of threads. Man oh man.

Alright, I'll follow that with a Matty photo by George Grantham Bain and a companion piece newspaper.

Early in my life, I used to dismiss Matty as just another pretty boy...years later after having read some biographies and listening to other collectors I have developed a better understanding and appreciation of him.

David, that Sporting Life Cabinet is a beaut. Since no one else has shown one (I don't believe)...here is my one and only Matty. I really love this card!!

I guess I can't say 'no' to brother Jimmy!

Here's my Matty. Well, the one I painted anywho:

http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b158/GKreindler/ChristyMathewsonSmall2.jpg

It's based off of Conlon's famous photo, and dates to 1911, when the Christian Gentleman (along with Rube Marquard and some of the speediest speedsters of the era) led his Giants to the World Series.

I normally don't say this, but the photo doesn't do the painting justice. I just got it back from the photographer's, so I'm trying to come to a final version that I'm happy with. Though in the end, I guess having a photo of a work is nothing like having the original in front of you. With that in mind, if any of you are heading to the National in a few weeks, stop by my booth and see the original!! I'd sure as hell love to meet y'all!

This image was a reprint in 1923 initially, and based on the stampings, repurposed again in 1926, 1927 and 1932.

The original auction description indicated it originated from the 1913 season.

However...

On page 139 of A Portrait of Baseball Photography, Yee/Fogel describe it as a Bain image from the 1901/1902 season.

It's clearly a home uniform from the 1901 - 1904 span (the white hat pinpoints 1901-1902).

I'd love to be able to nail down the exact year, though. Not sure how to do that.

This is the 1st time I ever saw this thread.
Lots of cool Matty items here!

I have a few items related to Matty's career to show:
On July 15, 1901 Christy Mathewson hurled his 1st of two career no-hitters @ St. Louis Cardinals. Here is a Season Pass for the 1901 St. Louis Cardinals.
This pass was issued to Bryan Snyder, who was the Pass Agent for the Frisco Railway.
Snyder was gent that was in charge of train transportation for ML players in that era.
Signed by Cardinals owner Frank deHass Robison.

The 2nd item is a Christy Mathewson Memorial Benefit Tag
After an outstanding career in baseball, World War I veteran Christy Mathewson succumbed in 1925 to an illness caused during a military training exercise. A memorial game was held on his behalf between the New York Giants and Washington Senators at the Polo Grounds on Wednesday, July 7th, 1926, to benefit Matty's family. This diecut disc is approximately 3" wide. One side features a picture of the legendary Giant, while the other has a tribute to the "Gallant Sportsman, Courageous Soldier, Kindly Gentleman."

3rd item is a ticket featuring Matty to the Sept. 30th, 1989 Bucknell Dartmouth football game at Christy Mathewson Memorial Stadium.

I do not own the last item, but it is a picture of the signed back of the actual check that Matty received for his book "Pitching in a Pinch".
