I had a chill go down my spine when I saw the almost complete set in the Goodwin upcoming auction. I have been working on a master set of these for 30+ years and I am missing just 1 card, you guessed it, the Herzog with black bar. The same one the set in Goodwin's is missing, coincidence?

My question to the board is: does this card actually exist?

Heck I even have the original ad piece for the set.

Thanks for any help, Dan.

Dan,
It was the last one I needed too, but I was able to acquire one earlier this year. I'll try to post a scan in a few days.

Hi Dan,

I have one thanks to David McDonald.

Here's a link to the scan I don't think there's any question that it's the toughest card in the set of 30.

A PSA 5 sold in 2006 and then a PSA3 went in 2005.

Robert,
I sold you that card for like 25 cents, right?

Hi David,

Don't remember the price, but there aren't a ton of folks actively looking for a D304 Herzog "traded" card so I'm sure the price today wouldn't be astronomical.

Anyhow, thanks again for helping with my set.

Do you still have your D304s?

Oh, yeah, still got the little babies. Not going anywhere. In fact, it's my SGC registry set that Goodwin alludes to in his description as "the closest counterpart to this offering . . only 90% complete and missing 3 cards" like it's maybe chopped liver. :o I'd be quite content just to have an intact player set of 25. If I helped you out it was an honor to work with the guy who wrote the D304 article that will stand for the ages.

My D304 set incl scans at: http://www.sgccardregistry.com/set.aspx?cat=1&set=456&userset=1242

Robert- if nobody was looking for "Herzog, traded" before, they will be looking for it now.:)

Awesome info guys and thanks!! What do you mean that Goodwin's set is only 90% complete? It is only missing the 1 card correct?

Thanks for letting me know it exists, not sure how I missed all of those sold but if they were 3rd party graded then it doesn't surprise me.

I don't look at too much graded stuff as the arthritis in my hands flares up when I bust them out of the slabs

Dan, don't worry, I'm sure t206museum.com will have half a dozen for sale in the very near future.

By way of clarification, the set Goodwin is auctioning lacks just one card (Herzog-traded) and is therefore 97% (29/30) complete. The set Goodwin was comparing it to (which happens to be my set) lacks three cards (Chance-traded, Chase-traded & Herzog-traded) and is therefore 90% (27/30) complete.

Gotchya Dave, thanks for clarifying that. If any of you are looking to part with your Herzog traded, you have a (blue gill) fish on the line - me.

Dan, can you post a scan of your ad piece for the set? Sounds like a neat piece.

Yes gladly, I have posted it a few times on the old board but will gladly pull it out tonight and scan it again. I love looking at that set! My set is the #4 best set on the Raw Registry.

Dan,
Thanks for the chuckle!

Dan,

After I used the image of your ad piece (thanks again) in my D304 article, a collector wrote me saying he thought it was an advertisement for D381. It's hard to tell either way. What do you think?

I will have to look at it but my memory says it mentions a few different breads and the player sillouettes look like poses from the D304 set to me. We can discuss the possibilities after I post a picture. My memory is terrible!

This ad piece is D304, no question in my mind:

Great ad piece. I personally would lean toward the D381 issue, though, because the ad text mentions 'photos' included with the loaves of bread. Would D304 cards be identified at the time as 'photos'?

Even with the 3 different backs mentioned? Aren't D381 just Fleischmann and some other very rare tab that leon and JC have? Dan.

I do see what you mean about the photo word and not card or trading card. Dan.

Brian

It may be possible - in the early adverts for T206s, they are not advertised as cards, but rather, pictures:
"Handsomely lithographed pictures in colors of famous professional baseball
players in the major leagues"

although I could definitely see a point that "photos" is more specific then "pictures"...
