This original vintage photo is from a rain-out during the 1915 World Series. These Sox players spent the afternoon at a newspaper's photo dept going through photographs of themselves. What a thrill that must have been!

The Red Sox have had some really tragic deaths. Most of us are familiar with The Golden Greek.

Then there was the tragic death of Ed Morris, who was stabbed to death at a picnic held in his honor.

Finally, poor Gordon McNaughton, who might still be with us if not for a violation of the seventh commandment:

Of course, this is as much a Boston Americans piece as it is a NY Americans--scorecard for Chesbro's "wild pitch" game:

This 1938 card was bought as a companion piece to display with the exceedingly rare '38 "heads up" wrapper. I decided on Foxx because I felt he gave me the biggest bang for my buck. And. it didn't hurt that he became the first three-time winner of the MVP in that year as well.

I can't wait to see Rawn's items. I am sure there will be some "Rough" items. This is one of my favorite items, a tribute to Duffy Lewis in 1947. He started the left field tradition (Duffy's Cliff) in Red Sox lore before the Kid and Yaz and Rice.

Edited to add: One of the downsides of being a Yankees fan (which I am not, in particular) is that you are compelled to hate the Red Sox. How could anybody hate the Red Sox? It's like hating Thomas Jefferson or chocolate chip cookies or Miss September. It's un-American.

Here you go Rawn. It's helping me towards the Boston AL Subset but I have a feeling it will be back at your house (where it belongs) sometime in the future. Down to needing 4 of the 15. Arrelanes, Niles, Stahl and Lindaman left.

David: Nice C-M Duffy. If you ever feel the need to part with it, look me up.

Also had to throw in the 67 Red Sox stickers. My favorite set as a 6-7 year old kid just getting into cards. Who knew it would be a life long habit.

Here are a couple of pretty cool BoSox Pennants....

The first features their nifty "Batting Sock" Mascot from the '50s... this little guy appeared on cards and programs quite a bit, but is surprisingly tough to find on vintage pennants.

Second is an oversized Red Sox Pennant from the early teens - a true work of art...

Here's one to revive this thread too. The same caveat applies: I'm a HORRIBLE photographer, and my basement studio doesn't lend itself nicely to shooting. With that in mind, please understand that it's not a good representation of the painting. Once I get it photographed, I'll post the professionally-done photo.

Another Conlon shot. Those of you who were at the National may have seen me working on it, and perhaps even threw a tomato or two. It's finally done, and after a varnish is being shipped out to its owner.

Oh, and for those of you who are curious, in the late 30s and early 40s, the Yankees would cover the tops of their home and away dugouts with a huge red tarp during special events. In this case, it's Opening Day at the Stadium in 1939, and with the Sox in town, this young man is about to start a brilliant career.

Some of a group of deckle edged fan snapshots featuring the Splinter -Sox vs Indians. I believe 1947, the first year of the lights. Also, the year the first Hancock Tower was built (missing, off right field) and a very prominent structure in the early Beantown skyline. I don't have these in hand yet and can't date with certainty and any related comments are appreciated.

I'm a fourth generation Yankees fan and thus genetically predisposed to despise all things Red Sox, but even I had to admit that this was pretty sweet. It's a photographic composite by Carl Horner (his photographs were the basis for a lot of the early 20th century tobacco cards, including the famous Honus Wagner) featuring the team that won the first World Series in 1903. There was some writing (player identifications) on the photo which made it a bit more affordable than it might otherwise have been, but it still sold for over $11,000.

Incredible stuff from everyone! Here are some odd ball Red Sox items I have been meaning to post. There is a lamp, a ceramic glove, a Frazee Theater pamphlet (ca 1924), two World's Champions bats (which I have been told were made to comemmorate the 1912 World Seris but I do not know if that is definitely true), and a Boy Scout merit badge pamphlet showing a Sox player (this piece combines my baseball and boy scout memorabilia collecting passions).

Thanks guys! I love the lamp as well although I have no idea if it was homemade (I think so) or when it was made. The Merit Badge pamphlet is from 1973, and it does not mention who the player is.
Below are two more oddball items to keep this thread alive a little longer. The first is a Red Sox doll (circa 1960s?) and the second is a spring training hat of similar vintage.

I thought that all of you Red Sox fans may enjoy this post. Here are photos of a (partially) scored program and ticket from the very first no-hitter ever thrown at the original historic Fenway Park. On June 21, 1916 the Red Sox' own George "Rube" Foster no-hit their arch-rival the NY Yankees 2-0 in front of crowd of 4,528 faithful fans. The ticket and scored program resided in a fan's scrapbook for over 80 years before in was liberated and made it into my waiting hands last year. Just for grins, I'm also including a picture postcard of Foster to show you what he looked like in his heyday. Enjoy!

perezfan
03-06-2010, 06:43 PM
Keith is correct. Stanford Pottery did these lamps for at least 6-7 teams, that I have seen. Athletics, Pirates, Phillies, Reds, Indians and Braves are among those that I've seen.

Nice Piece... are you going to seek out a vintage shade for it? You will find tons of options on Ebay. If so, please post... would love to see the end result.

aelefson
03-07-2010, 06:41 PM
Thanks Mark and Keith! I had no idea it was a Stanford Pottery lamp! I paid less than 5.00 for it at an antique shop in New Bedford MA a few months ago. I figured it was homemade. I am not sure what I will do with it now. Are the shades for these lamps specific to the teams (do they even show baseball graphics at all?)?
Thanks again for the help,
Alan

perezfan
03-07-2010, 11:51 PM
I've seen lots of different shades with these. A replacement shade is not a big deal (oe even a detractor). I would go with a plain beige or off-white shade, and let the base speak for itself.

I am not sure whether these lamps originally came with a team graphic or logo on the shade, but I doubt it. Perhaps someone else here might know?

I am proud to add my just authenticated 1975 Carlton Fisk home white post season game used jersey to the mix. It appears that this is quite possibly the same jersey that Carlton Fisk was wearing when he hit the famous homerun in game #6 of the 1975 World Series.

Mostly because Steve brought this thread up to the top of the stack....

I posted this in the December pickups. This is a tough dated Boston Americans ticket from 1909. Boston's (P) Smoky Joe Wood vs. Detroit's (P) George Mullen. Smoky Joe beat Wabash George in his career year in which he won 29 games. In spite of Detroit losing, the Tigers clinched the AL on September 30, 1909 sending Ty Cobb and the Bengals to their 3rd straight World Series. This was Cobb's last trip to the World Series.

This is the first time I have come across this thread. Wow there are very impressive items here. Allow me to share my own two favorite Red Sox pieces. The first picture contains items that are of little significance in terms of value other than the memories they bring back to me. In 1970 at age seven my father took me to see my first game at Fenway. Needless to say I was hooked. When people ask me how long I have been collecting I always show them this picture of me with the pennant and pins that remain in my collection. He bought me those items that day and I will cherish them always. The fact that I managed to hold onto them for 41 years speaks volumes of the impact that my father and that day had on me. The other is a Fisk a payroll check. I realized early in life that my own meager baseball talents would never generate such a check with my own name on it.

Do you have the Armando Galarraga Ticket from when he was "jobbed" a couple of years ago? I've been meaning to ask about this, and the Harvey Haddix game as well. Even though neither qualifies as a No-Hitter, it seems like they'd make interesting additions to your incredible collection.

Then again, if you tried to collect every "near" No-Hit stub, you'd probably go nuts.

Yes, I actually do have both Harvey Haddix and Armando Galarraga's near perfect game. I'm sure that you're not shocked by this revelation.

BTW, I view what defines a no-hitter game differently than what the current philosophy is by MLB. I started collecting no-hitter tickets in 1972. What defined what was a no-hitter game when I began collecting was much different than the current parameters that went into effect in 1991. I collect tickets to any official ML game where a hit was not allowed. I have games that are shortened, unofficial no-hitters that the game ran less than 9 innings as well as no-hit games that the no-hitter was broken up in extra innings, ala Harvey Haddix, Mark Gardner, Pedro Martinez et al.

I actually do have the largest no-hitter ticket collection going by perhaps 40%. I know mostly all of the top collectors of this theme. I'm fortunate because many years of networking with other collectors has given me a great opportunity to add tickets that are scarce and new to the hobby.

You might be surprised that a have a smaller collection of tickets to no-hitter games that were lost in the 9th inning. The ultimate pitching frustration! What can I say, I'm a sick puppy! :p

Rather than post pictures of the Haddix and Galarraga near perfect game tickets here, I'll do it in another separate post so as to not clutter up the Boston thread. This will also give me an opportunity to post a few related items that I have not shown before to the Galarraga near perfect game.

Scott- Your no-hitter collection is amazing. I wondered if you have ever picked up any no-hit tickets that were not advertised as being no-hit games? I assume that some of these tickets were pulled out of scrap books and others might have been marked as no-hit games by the fan who was fortunate enough to attend the game.

Hi Adam,

Thanks! Yes, actually both of these scenarios are true.

The thing to keep in mind about early baseball tickets is that that most patrons attending games did not have dated tickets. Many teams, Yankees, Indians, Tigers, St. L Browns, Cardinals etc., etc. did not have dated early vintage tickets. Unless a ticket accompanied a scored, dated program or the fan wrote info re: the game on it, a collector like me has a difficult time locating early vintage games that you can pinpoint to a specific date.

Also, it's important to note that even the teams that did have a dated version of a baseball ticket, these were rare and reserved these only for season ticket holders (there were very few) and special dignitaries. Attendance in early baseball was frequently very low because night baseball did not yet exist and people worked during the day. Night baseball did not even begin until 1934 and very few teams had it for many years.

It was not uncommon for early games to have attendance in the 500-2000 range, when attendance was even reported at all in the newspaper. BTW, attendance reporting was very inconsistent at the turn of the 20th century and before. O/T- I have a collection of early baseball newspapers (over 120 early no-hit games) and I have noted this when I have read through the articles surrounding no-hitters....

As far as scrapbooks go, I will tell you that if it were not for scrapbooks, many older vintage baseball tickets would exist today. Several of my rarest older vintage baseball tickets came from fans that kept a scrapbook.

Scott, I don't think anyone answered this so I'll take a stab. I think it's Jason Varitek and I believe he's caught 4 no hitters.

Hi Mike,
You are correct, with an asterisk after it. Varitek has actually caught 4 official no-hitters, plus the 5 inning, rain shortened, unofficial no-hitter pitched by Devern Hansack that I pictured in my thread. It's important to note that Varitek is the winner by a mile. The runners up, HOF'ers Ray Schalk and Yogi Berra, caught only 3 in their storied careers.

Does that mean that Varitek is one of the greatest receivers ever? I would argue that he certainly can call a great game. It also gives you a glimpse into the depth of Boston Red Sox pitching over a decade in time and a fair amount of luck mixed in. Pretty neat stuff! When Varitek hangs up his spikes at some point, I plan on getting him to sign a ball with an inscription of how many no-hitters he ends up catching. It's certainly an unusual statistic that I'm sure that he is very proud of as a backstop. A lot of great catchers with HOF long careers have not been so lucky. Case in point, Carlton Fisk never caught one. Amazing! He was the receiver when Tom Seaver pitched his 300th win though....

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

This historic composite photo celebrates Babe Ruth as he broke Buck Freeman's single season record of 25 home runs, that he set 20 years earlier in 1899.

The slug tells the whole story and is dated 9/9/1919. One other comment regarding this photo, is both images of Babe & Buck are TYPE 3 photos. They were pictures of a picture, developed, pasted side by side, and photographed one more time to create the end result. Extremely rare for the era. I would say that regardless of what TYPE this photo is, the historic content trumps all, and the value wouldn't really be affected.

I've re-posted my 1915 Sox Pitchers TYPE 1 photo that was used for the Bambino's image, so you can compare the images of a TYPE 1 & TYPE 3 side by side.

These are from Dr Leander Powers collection. From his bio, he was some kinda guy!
After graduating from medical school and serving his residencies, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and participated in the Invasion of Sicily with the 45th Infantry Division as a captain in the medical corps. He received several medals, including the Bronze Star and was mentioned by name in war correspondent Ernie Pyle's book, "Brave Men." As Pyle wrote, "These men lived a rough-and-tumble life. They slept on the ground, worked ghastly hours, were sometimes under fire, and handled a flow of wounded that would sicken and dishearten a person less immune to it.

Not a Red Sox collector, but recently picked up this photo of their manager, Bill Carrigan, taken in June of 1928 - not the greatest time to be a Boston fan.

From the time Babe Ruth left, the Red Sox didn't finish .500 again until 1935, so Carrigan had very little to do with it - they were actually worse both before he began managing them, AND got even worse after he left. He was a player-manager for them during three of their best years, just prior to the fall: 1914-1916 and Babe Ruth called him the best manager he ever played for.

Killer Hatband Scott! I had my eye on that. You did well. I picked up a few unique new Sox Pennants. I will try and post them when in hand. In the meantime I picked up a nice 46 All Star program and a 61 All Star stub awhile back.

OK, not a big dollar item or anything, but I thought it might be neat to have my ticket from the 100th anniversary signed by the oldest player in attendance.

So I took my ticket and mailed it last Friday from Boston to Bobby Doerr's residence in Oregon. Eight days (and two cross-country trips later), the ticket arrived back to me today, with a gorgeous signature from the 94 year old.

Most impressive, Mr. Doerr....

Nice piece, Scott!

Doerr's signature is still fluid and gorgeous. And I'm very glad it is.
