This is from a book I just out sniped JimB on :), on the BST. As most know Preston Orem was one of the original collectors back in the day and is known as a baseball historian too. I believe he researched through old newspapers as well as watching the game itself. enjoy

Orem wrote/compiled a critically acclaimed book on the early game. Not sure if this is his only book:

Orem wrote that book and added a set of supplements that covered the years 1882-1891. They are tough to find.

Interesting that the seller on Amazon is asking $206 for a worn copy, when mint copies are readily available for around $35. Buyer beware!

I have a couple copies of that book. I think sometimes people initially misinterpret when it was written given the title of the book.

I'm looking for these...has anyone ever turned up copies? Have looked everywhere - libraries, universities, no luck.

Is Mr. Orem still alive?

Couldn't find his particulars on the Googlenet but he stated that he saw Lave Cross play for the Athletics which would have been 1901-1905 so I am deducing that Mr Orem is presently watching games from the Skybox.

That'd be a safe bet, yeah. what I wonder is, people cite those later volumes in books that come out...where the hell are they finding them!

Cross was playing in 1910--he is a member of the T209-2 and T210 sets

Preston Orem died in December 1971 in Albuquerque. Age 77.

Aha, thanks.

Anyone have any leads on perhaps a library that houses that second volume of his book...or someplace where it can be found online? I'd love to read that work, the first volume was so superb.
